Discussion Why do some people believe the earth is flat?

I can get my head around some conspiracy theories. I'm even susceptible to some but, this one has never made sense to me. How would people even benefit by lieing about the shape of the earth?

I suppose I could believe that the lunar landings were faked- in order to save face. I don't though- by the way. I do believe they were real.

I guess they must disbelieve all space photography of this world and others because it would seem logical that if all the other planets were round(ish,) that ours probably would be too.

I wonder if they have patterns marked out and a reason for the passage of day and night, the seasons, the location of the sun and moon in the sky at varying times of the year. Do they think the sun orbits the flat earth instead of the other way around maybe?

Any flat earthers here want to explain their theories? Maybe there's something I'm missing.

I'm about 99% certain most of the flat-earthers are just Andy Kaufman-esque trolling people right now. I mean, there's no way anyone can be that stupid. And, I try not to call people stupid... but I'm not sorry... if you truly truly believe the Earth is flat, you are stupid.

Now if you want to have fun trolling people... I'll give you that... or if you wanted to try and do a thought exercise of "what if" and see how you could make it actually work... go for it. I've done that for fun... like trying to make the math work and explain everything... for fun... but if you truly believe it... you're an idiot.

Mentally impaired people don't believe the Earth is flat. So, I'm not insulting anyone who can't help it here. These are stupid-by-choice people if they actually believe it.

Speaking of sun orbiting the earth... Back in the olden days when people did think the Earth was the center... That made a kind of sense since we were on Earth, right? And if you don't know better you start with that assumption and see if you can make it work... And those ancient astronomers could damn well predict the orbits of other planets and bodies. The math can be made to work... so it was fine for people to think that, since nothing they discovered early on broke their assumption... until something did... and there was resistance, notably the Christian religion... but eventually it gave way to proof.

They don't, well most anyway. The joke is on the people that think they're serious and not on the so called flat earthers. Take a look at YouTube, there are no shortage of these idiots, SciManDan for example. That is unless they are the ones trolling.
