Who thinks suicide is honorable?

It is for me personally. Suicide would be the best possible thing for me, as it would prevent potentially decades of a horrible life. I see no point to suffering until old age just to die eventually. As long as I am alive, things could get so much worse for me and dying would mean that I would escape that possibility.

Honour is the gift a man gives himself. Would you mistreat another in the way life has mistreated you? Would you do this to yourself or standby and let this happen to someone else?
Honour is a code of conduct that sets our attitude and behavior.
To be old and frail might be the most satisfying thing in the world if those you have helped along the way make the fire inside you burn warmly... But then again you might be old and frail and regularly suffer the indignities associated with age or disability or poverty or the other myriad of equalities that 'life' deposits upon us...
Personally I think it is down to the individual and I will not judge anyone for how they feel.

In fact, the question is really not simple and I prefer to say that I am not a pro-lifer.

I think that courage and suicide are defined by several factors:

1) Individual: courage will depend on what you value yourself. If for you it is an act of courage, then it is courageous. But a guy who suffers and decides to fight against life can be just as brave.

2) Moral: society will value a guy who fights all his life, but for me, subjectively, beating yourself up all your life is not a sign of courage but of submission. On the other hand, for suicide, I think there are 2 typical social views of suicide, either "He's a coward", or "Wow, how he did it, I would never have the courage to do that". In Japan for example, suicide is an act of altruism as many Japanese may commit suicide feeling that they are holding society back (I don't know much about it but it seems to me).

3) Social pressure: challenges requiring suicide for example, that, for the time being, I find sad, because it depends rather little on the choice of the author, but more on a pressure of the group to which the individual wants to belong.

With these few examples, we can see that it is not easy to say where courage really lies.

Personally, I think that suicide is the most courageous act in the world, because it is about confronting the existential fear of every human being, it is also about going up against SI and taking risks to have access to the methods, all this, by plunging alone into the immortal unknown.

But I think that at the stage where many of us here are, it is no longer just a question of courage, but of future.

I think it used to be viewed that way- not to say it's likely 100% historically acurate but in the film Gladiator, the evil emperor refers to the decision to commit suicide as 'noble'. I believe- even in the bible, it's not always referred to as a bad thing.

I guess it really depends on the circumstances. I think trying to prevent harm to others is noble. I think some people genuinely feel like a burden- financially/emotionally on others and while that's terrifically sad, I guess it can be seen as a noble sentiment.

I think in most cases though, suicide is more about the shit going on in your own life. Most of the time I view it more as sensible rather than noble. I definitely think it's brave. I guess bravery has links to being noble.

I wouldn't raise suicide to the level of being honorable. Some probably are. I see it more as a fundamental human right because suffering prolonged hopelessness and losing freedom is bad. Freedom is human right.

And if you die you can't feel that honour yourself.

Many suicidal people think those they are leaving would be better off without them, and I would say in the majority of cases that isn't how the people left behind feel about it.

No I don't think suicide is honorable. When I was a teenager I thought that. But I consider this as a little bit imature stance from me when I was younger. Suicide is in most cases a tragedy. I think honor is not that important.

I felt extremely embarassed after my both psychosis. I had this point view when I was younger as I said. But I recognized suicide is way more existential than the concept of honor. I had the feeling of being humiliated. This was a very pathological feeling due to the past mania.
Though I tried to tell me that there are more important things than what some assholes think of you. And yes I consider this as helpful and a smart stance. Trying not to give a fuck what people/the society think of you. For me honor is also related to status. We should rather change the obsession with both. There are way more important things on earth than that.


I feel the notion of honor can prevent that people search for help. Because they feel ashamed due the fact how stigmatized suicide and mental illness is. I think open discussions about these topics are more preferable.

The notion of honorable suicides is not really helpful in my opinion. You can obseve that in Asia. For example in Japan the suicide rates explode. Moreover I could imagine that if suicide is considered as honorable the people don't see assisted suicide as necessary. I don't know any Asian country where assisted suicide is allowed.

Honestly, I don't even attach the concept of honor to suicide. Like, did I eat "honorably"? Or brush my teeth honorably? It's just an action I'll take out of necessity.

Do you mean the Roman Senate or was there a Greek city state that had something like a Senate back then too? Just curious because I'm kind of obsessed with this sort of stuff, but apparently I wasn't obsessed enough because I didn't know about the festival on those islands.

I wish they still had those festivals now. I'd go if I could.

@Journeytoletgo I think it depends entirely on the reason behind someone's decision to commit suicide. It can be either honorable or dishonorable. It can be brave or cowardly, depending entirely on the situation. I don't know which one it will be for me, probably dishonorable because of having to leave people behind, knowing it will hurt them. I don't want to hurt them, but I feel like there's no choice for me anymore.

It is and isn't for me. It would be honorable to die now than exist to experience even worse states. Things are even worse than here: 2021
But otherwise I have family who depend on me both in physical and mental terms. Being the weird person I am I did try to convince them that things would be better without me in it but they wouldn't have it. That was the obvious result but it helps to try.
