So I've been taking Wellbutrin for about 9 months now and for about the last 3 month I've been suicidal to the point of obsessing over it pretty much 24/7. Two days ago I stopped taking Wellbutrin because I have gotten horrible sleep on it and ran out of CBD/THC edibles that had allowed me to sleep. So my suicidal ideation level has been a solid 8/10 or higher for pretty much every day. Yet being off of the Wellbutrin for just two days and I caught myself thinking "Wow, I don't think I've though about suicide for at least a few hours". I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience on Wellbutrin, or if this is just one of those phases where I'm "somewhat less suicidal" and it will return.

I had this exact experience, only from taking Wellbutrin for a few weeks. However stopping it didn't make it go away. It triggered suicidal ideation that has remained since then as I continue to try to find any meds that make me not want to yeet myself off a bridge.

My psych said Wellbutrin can trigger suicidal ideation because it is "activating" and can give you more energy to feel and maybe act on those suicidal feelings.

Crap, prior to quitting Wellbutrin I already had a feeling that it would never permanently go away.

I was keen to try wellbutrin but my Dr wouldn't prescribe it for that very reason. He said it causes suicide ideation and isn't really used any more for depression or anxiety. I'm in Australia and don't think you can get it for mental health anymore here but sounds like its different in other countries.

I did independent research before I talked to my doctor and asked for it specifically due to low complications from an "intimacy", weight gain, and "wanting to sleep all the time" standpoint. To be honest, I'm still willing to use it...if that says anything about my mental health level right now.

Yes I did the same. It seemed like a really good option from what I read online. I was surprised the suicide ideation wasn't emphasised more. My Dr was very clear he felt it was dangerous and well known to have suicidal thoughts as side effects from his experience. I would still like to try it also but not an option unfortunately.

For the past six years or so, I have taken 450 mg of generic bupropion XL and 10 mg of Abilify/aripiprazole every morning (I live in the US). I had not known Wellbutrin/bupropion could trigger suicidal ideation. I had increased appetite, weight gain, and desire for excessive sleep on my previous antidepressants. Other than the near-constant low hum of suicidal thoughts (I would say it has been 4/10 for several months now), I can function more or less effectively. However, stress — even at a relatively low level — heightens my suicidal ideation.

I know its a commom place and you're just looking for opinions, but you really need to check this with your doctor. Maybe the wellbutrin is causing the suicidal ideation, but then again maybe abruptly quitting the wellbutrin makes it even worse.

I would ask them for lithium, I think it works pretty well with suicidal thoughts
