Why does the concept of any form of intimacy always immediately fill me with a sense of loss? I was trying to watch anime with a friend today and I emotionally shut down from a romantic scene. I wanted to cry and I wanted fo lash out in anger. I am so emotionally broken.

I think it reminds you of your unmet needs and a defense mechanism is activated to keep you from killing yourself. My advice is to notice how the sadness and anger are more or less just physical sensations (lvl 2 would be to catch exactly how the mind produces them). I've never had a gf so when I hear or see stuff like that I can get triggered as well, but we've got this.
I do not understand emotions either, in a way it is why I am glad to feel empty a lot of the time. Emotions can be painful and our own thoughts can torture us. To answer the question, maybe you wanting to cry is an coping mechanism, that is why we cry I guess, as the physical action of crying is an attempt to relieve the emotional pain.
