it's fine I guess, I don't want to go to hell.
but I would rather have a life that isn't miserable or have a different life where I wasn't miserable.

I feel scared of heaven but for different reasons. I just don't want to have a conscience anymore. The idea that my thoughts could live on is so scary, I just want to be able to forget my mistakes. Living with them forever sounds so unbelievably painful. Hell sounds so much worse of course. But nothingness is the only thing that seems comforting. Even if I had all I wanted in life tomorrow I don't think I'd be happy, because unfortunately I can't change the past.

I find it incredibly appealing. By definition it's such an incredible and awesome place.
It's better than non existence. It's better than living on Earth. It's better than hell.

The issue is there is no evidence of such place existing. I'd rather operate on facts. If it turns out that there is some heaven and some clear rules how to reach such place, that would make things much easier.

I'm curious what do you think happens to your bad thoughts? Like do they just vanish? I struggle so much with this because I don't understand how things can be fine given I'll have knowledge of the things I've done and lived.

I never thought about this, interesting question. Do people in this theoretical heaven place just forgot about all bad that happened/is happening or can somehow ignore it? It reminds me of the 'I got mine, fuck you.' mentality.

I don't know. It's the scariest thought to me. Like I hope it's real and memories are erased and you get to live peacefully in heaven, but I don't think I can ignore said memories. Maybe god is just so comforting they calm you down

I'm religious. I am not intending to blaspheme
But it occurs to me, this world certainly exists. It contains unimaginable horrors.
How would heaven be some opposite? Some perfect place. Why create both?

Maybe heaven is perfectly suited for the individual and for you it will be non-existance.

I hope to be reunited with all my murdered loved ones in the Great Beyond. I don't like to call it heaven because I despise the tyrant god of the monotheistic religions.

There is no such "god" who is pure goodness, this much I can take as a fact, and here's why:
1. The god of Christianity etc. is evidently a nasty, petty, jealous tyrant, the evidence is right there in his bible for everyone to read.
2. Then there is the *All*, which is what I believe in; some see it as synonymous with "god" but I have a strong dislike for that term because of its strong association with the aforementioned, petty tyrant god of the bible. But the All is not pure goodness either, it cannot be because it is All - there exists nothing that isn't part of the All, since otherwise the All couldn't be "all". The All therefore contains all of goodness and bliss, but contains as well all imaginable and unimaginable cruelty and horror, because it is All.

I hope that in the infinity that is the All there is a place for everything and everyone that has ever existed. When we ascend from this world we'll have a higher perspective, and all the painful memories are not what defines us, and we can detach from them and let them go. This much I heard a lot, and it makes sense to me.
Personally though, since I'm anything but a Christian, I don't believe in undeserved forgiveness. I refuse to ever forgive the murderers of my loved ones, and I absolutely intend to make them pay.

I was raised in an atheist household, so my knowledge is limited. maybe they need a perfect place to compensate for all of the world's flaws?

If you're talking about the biblical heaven, I wouldn't recommend it. It seems like you wouldn't be suffering, but you wouldn't be having much fun either.

Revelation 7:9-17
  • 9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
  • 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

    "Salvation belongs to our God,
    who sits on the throne,
    and to the Lamb."

  • 11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
  • 12 saying:

    "Amen!
    Praise and glory
    and wisdom and thanks and honor
    and power and strength
    be to our God for ever and ever.
    Amen!"

  • 13 Then one of the elders asked me, "These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?"

  • 14 I answered, "Sir, you know."

    And he said, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
  • 15 Therefore,

    "they are before the throne of God
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne
    will shelter them with his presence.
  • 16
    'Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.
    The sun will not beat down on them,'
    nor any scorching heat.
  • 17
    For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;
    'he will lead them to springs of living water.'
    'And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.'

i remember reading in a book as a kid that the ancient egyptians believed that after you died your soul was weighed on a scale and if it was lighter than the feather you went to heaven, if it was heavier than the feather it got eaten by crocodiles, eternal nonexistence.

what I meant is that eternal paradise is less appealing to me compared to just having a life that isn't miserable or having a different life where I wasn't miserable.

That's because you have no idea what eternal paradise could entail, whereas you know what good life is in this mortal existence by having examples laid before your eyes by examining others' lives so your human [i.e. mortal] mind subconsciously and then consciously prefers living normal human life rather than finding themselves in eternal paradise that is unfathomable. We have no idea what is it like to be in the realm where there are no disturbances like hunger, poverty, pain, illnesses, wars, etc. so it's natural to be sceptical about the nature of it whether it is desirable or not in terms of goodness and badness as some people really find that kind of place bad instead of good but again, they judge with their human brains so it's irrelevant because nobody knows how we might feel inside that kind of place if we ended up appearing there.
