Scientists say there's a second brain, near your stomach. This "gut brain" can even get Alzheimer's.

So that kinda weirds me out when people talk about shooting yourself in "the brain". (The bigger one in your head.) What'll happen when the gut brain tries communicating with the head brain that's blasted to smithereens, for however long it has to live?

That's why you aim for the heart. It's more consistently lethal than the brain. I would rather deal with 30 seconds of pain than wind up a vegetable. As a plus, if what you say is true, then both brains get to realize shit just hit the fan before lights out.

I know it may sound stupid but how do you know where to aim in the heart? that is, the shot reaches the center and not on the edges of the heart

If you have a shotgun you can't miss.

The firearms megathread has lots of info on chest/heart shots, shotguns, .357's, etc.

I'm no expert but if you can locate the center of your heart I'd think that'd work.

It's the center of your sternum, or even every so slightly to the left. If you look at the pic, you could aim at an angle that allows you to miss the spine, while still hitting the heart right in the center. This would be good to avoid the very slight possibility of paralyzing yourself should the attempt fail.

I'm sure it hurts terribly for about a minute or so. Watch a video of someone hunting. Even if they get a perfect shot to the heart, that animal is alive for a few seconds, and you can tell it's in tremendous pain. Shooting the brain, if done correctly, is instant and painless. But you can literally blow half your head off and still be alive. Even if you just clipped the edge of your heart, you're still going to die either from hemorrhaging from that wound, or the hole you just put in your lung filling with blood and suffocating to death.

You can see how the heart and lungs overlap on the left side of your chest:
