People use SI to mean different things - suicide ideation, suicidal intent, survival instinct. I am assuming you don't mean survival instinct.
SSRIs can increase suicidality in some patients. In general, they tend to improve depressive symptoms better than placebo, but there is no guarantee, and a significant minority of patients will need to try several treatments in order to get better. Speak to your doctor.

SSRIs didn't helpled me with suicide ideation. I taken them with antipsychotics It made very bitchy and tired and I'm used to cut myself a lot while being on the meds. Now I discarded them and doing fine. They can cause weight gain and it'll certainly can mess with your self esteem, so you may probably end up much worse on them.
There's some OTC alternatives to improve mood with less side effect like tryptophan supplements or you can consider to change your lifestyle first before taking drugs. It'll sound like a platitude but getting a better sleep with proper diet is more effective to cope with suicidality than drugs. In my case it'd helped a lot.

I have been on paroxetine for years (under the names paxil or seroxat).
Regarding Suicide Ideation - it does decrease the amount . I still want to CTB, but what is more important that I find it
easier to shrug it off. The effect is gradual, so it was hard for me to evaluate the effect it has on me.
Once, I decided to stop taking it. I did a very gradual withdrawall, taking 10mg less every couple of months.
About three months after stopping completely, I realizes that I was thinking much more
about suicide and feeling much worse. So I went back on it.
I am now taking the lowest dose (20 mg) and I feel it makes a big difference.

Though it helps some people for sure, I took it for a year & it did very little. It effected my sex life & I missed a dose once & the withdrawal symptoms scared me out of taking it any more.
But that's not to say it won't offer you some help.
I was a psych nurse & know that some patients were much better on it.
As far as helping with SI, I would get benzos.
