when burning charcoal outside , how long does it take for the smoke to leave?

I suspect it varies depending on the type / brand of charcoal you're using and the quantity you're burning. Sorry, I know that doesn't really answer your question. This is also my preferred method, but I don't know how much is enough charcoal.
