What do you think about Nitschke's statement that the peaceful pill handbook is not for people with mental illness?

I've started reading the peaceful pill handbook and came across the statement that mentally ill people aren't meant to read the book. I think some of you disagree like I do. Have you read the book? How did you like it?

absolutely disagree with this policy, but i'm not surprised because life is a prison, this world is a dystopia, and of course euthanasia/assisted suicide will not become available in the coming decades... i hate this world! and by the way no, i haven't read this book

The book is very thick, but at then end it's all about the gas method and N sources. The rest is more theoretically.
Who decides, that one is mentally ill and can not purchase the book? Some say, their neigbors are.
Some of his critics would claim, that Nitschke himself has some mental illness, because of his silly acting and should be banned from reading his own book.
The fineprint "If you are not over 50 years of age, please do not waste our time by buying the book! Your purchase will NOT be honored." can also be interpreted, that in this case there is no refund and they scam you.

Off course he wouldn't say that PPH is for mentally ill people. He would never say that even if he believed in the contrary. This could attract more unwanted attention to the book

Most people diagnosed with mental illness aren't actually mentally ill. Depression, GAD, and the other most common "iLlNeSsEs" are just products of not being a complete drone, having some bad luck, and doing some thinking once in a while.

I know PN doesn't actually hold this stance on a personal level(I've listened to every single interview/podcast he's done that's available) he believes any adult who is of sound mind(which he has stated does not necessarily exclude people with mental illness) should have the right to make this choice. However I think that Exit probably limit it to over 50s because they want to avoid any added controversy or conflict with the law etc. Obviously they are limited in what they can do from a legal standpoint because the law regarding assisted ctb is very arbitrary in most countries

Death is the scariest thing and most people don't talk about it or being denial or not being open to talk about it.Death remains as mystery. If euthanasia is allowed then death becomes something people not scared to talk about and the demand to CBT become higher if they know there are peaceful exit.Criminal can easily escape, bad parent can simply run away from responsible and the mess they cause, and slowly everybody realize that there is no meaning of this life and human become extinct because of nobody want to suffer unless the world we live is free from suffering then it is worth to live which is impossible.Thats why mental ilness is not a good reason to die coz everybody can have mental ilness if he happen to be in a bad situation so more people want to ctb
I do not think he thinnks that way. He Supported Adam mayer clayton( Story in Youtube). And helped him to get N. I guess it is just to Protect the pph for more critizism

I agree with this. I have seen quite a few interviews with PN as well and he does hold these views. However he is more targeted towards the terminally ill or older people when it comes to books and seminars. I think that is because there are lots of assisted dying movements. Change is happening in some places but change is very slow and gradual. Maybe one day there will be more access for mentally ill sufferers but Rome wasn't built in a day as they say. I don't know, it is a complicated issue with a lot of Politics surrounding it. I myself am a member of the Dignity in Dying movement in the UK, so any progress that may occur from these organisations the better. Dr Nitschke, while not perfect, has done some great things and helped many people. He is in many ways a continuation of the late and brilliant Dr Jack Kevorkian. We actually need more Doctors and people like him, in my opinion.

I think the obvious missing piece here, is that a mental "illness" is just... whatever some asshole with a committee decides it is. Gay? Mental illness. Religious belief I don't like? Mental illness. Grieving over things that I want to pretend didn't happen or weren't that bad? Mental illness. Different sensory experiences than me? Mental illness. Not a productive worker in capitalism? Mental illness. God I can't believe people actually buy this shit.

I've watched a few of his interviews and I think he wants to help everyone who wants to ctb. He chooses 50+ and terminally Ill because it's easier for people to understand right now.
I also think he wrote that as a formality for legal reasons but we read it anyway.

And thats not the definition of an utopĂa? the death of all the fucking forms of life? More important all the fucking humans the most evil of all forms?.
Suffering Is inherent to existence like existence Is inherent to suffering.
I have only read the parts that interest me so I haven't read this specific extract, but maybe he could have written it as short of a legal disclaimer? Mentally ill people get usually treated like minors by the law so maybe he'd wanna cover his own ass there. Or it could be an optics move like "See, this is only for people in full use of their mental capacity!" Like being suicidal in itself won't get you institutionalized in a mental facility lmao
I haven't had the privilege to yet reqd it but who is anyone to say it's not for mentally ill people. Some of the greatest people in history had mental illnesses and lived a relatively normal life. My own experience I would say that people with a mental illness are some of the most in tune and down to earth people around. It's the doctors who try to suppress them. We all have a / the right to say I don't want to live this life anymore.
Yes. some mentally ill can get better with the help of therapy and drugs and it had happened several times, but the current definition of mentally ill people includes all people that wanna commit suicide, a lot of people have rational reasons for suicide which cannot be helped by drugs or therapy. besides, he probably said that to let the fucking pro lifers off his back.

Exactly. Some people may want and seek the help available. But many just don't want to be helped. They just want an end to it. How are they treated. They are locked up and pumped full if drugs. It's wrong. Pro lifers can say what they like they really can. They choose to live and I like many others are planning my suicide. Neither if us are wrong. We just have different beliefs. We should respect them.

No, they are dead wrong, they may mean well, but their beliefs are causing a tremendous number of people to suffer endlessly with great pain and anguish, they are our sworn enemies, thank goodness we live in a time we haven't achieved immortality, can you imagine being forced to live forever? these psychopaths would advocate for that. i only pity future generations if immortality is achieved.
I believe everyone has the right to choose and air there views whether right or wrong. This is how wars are started one side believes they are right over the other. Point being is do what you think is right. No one has the right to say it criticis what you want to do. Its your body and mind.

$1,000 for a lifetime membership, like buying a bulletproof vest marked "guaranteed for the life of the user."
But seriously, some mental illnesses like borderline personality disorder have no cure, only treatments. It's a very broad brush for the book to say it's not for the mentally ill but the legal and PR concerns have been well mentioned.

If giving people freedom to choose a peaceful exit on there own terms leads to a collapse of civilization as we know it then... so be it. If extinction is mankind's destiny as a consequence of being able to express our inherent human right to die on our own terms, then that is the natural course of our fate. At least we can say we were free.

Just thinking about who would win a war between people who would rather live forever if they could and people who would consider it a blessing if they died on the battlefield...
