Discussion What are your experiences with bupropion?

This is the antidepressant im currently taking. I feel like SSRIs or SNRIs are still the better option in most cases, but im worried about the permanent side effects. does anyone abstain from taking them because of this too (specifically PSSD)

I didn't really like my bupropion, but I know some people have positive experinces on it

it was a while ago since I discontinued it, but I think I remember it making me slightly more uncomfortable, or maybe annoyed. Maybe it was affecting my sleep or something, idk

Didn't do a whole lot for me. I've been on as high as 450mg (really shouldn't have been, but my PCP was incompetent and I didn't know better). Most recently I was on 300mg then 150. I stopped taking it and I don't miss it. I could say that about a lot of drugs, though... YMMV.

What permanent side effects are you concerned about?

I LOVED my bupropion. Made me feel amazing. More energy. Horny AF (though I already had a high libido). The problem was it made my insomnia and anxiety worse. I slept for only 3 hours/night and I would get heart palpitations randomly for no reason.

The other thing that bothered me what I started fearing death. I have never really feared death my entire life, but I would get sudden, bone-deep chills while thinking "oh my god I am going to die some day". That was really the reason I gave it up. It sucks because it made me feel the best I have ever felt in my life.

I didn't experience that personally, even on a high dose.

for what drug? as far as i know this risk only pertains to serotonergic drugs which bupropion is not

I'm on it right now, been taking it for only two weeks since I am constantly searching for a medication that will improve my life at least a little. Don't really notice anything so far. I hope it goes okay.

I'm also avoiding ssris because they just lobotomize me. Everything loses its meaning. I've been on setraline I think it was.. for about 6 months. I didn't get PSSD from it, though sometimes I wonder if I haven't fully recovered my imaginative feelings.

Im sorry to hear about your experience, i hope you find the right medicine soon. I heard they do genetic testing for things like that. havent looked into it much but maybe you can if you havent already. anways, thats also why im trying to steer away from ssri's

Oh my bad, I misunderstood. I've been on Prozac, Luvox, Pristiq, and Effexor and didn't notice any sexual side effects. Again, YMMV.

I have PSSD, buproprion didn't made a difference for better or worst in general and sexual symptoms. That's what i noticed.

There's some people that says they got PSSD from buproprion, but it seems to be less common.

For me antidepressants were basically crap.

I don't think it has made me less sad even though the nurse practitioner upped my dosage from 150mg to 300mg, but I have only been taking the 300mg for a little more than a week so it is too soon to tell. It has for sure made me less irritable though, and I haven't had an angry outburst with my family ever since I took it.

Edit: I searched it up and bupropion does not help with anger and can actually make it worse, but if it is a byproduct of depression, it can help. So I guess it has helped with my depression in a way after all haha.

Didn't work for me and withdrawal sucked. But it seems to kinda help my sister. She takes it for fibromyalgia but I know she's also super depressed like the rest of the family and she's been able to function enough to hold down two jobs, so I guess it could be worth a shot for you.

Honestly, from my experiences with SSRI's I have never had an issue with sexual dysfunction of any kind after stopping use. From my experience it tends to be anti-psychotics like risperidone and quietapine that cause sexual dysfunction but only under active treatment

I take 300 mg since a year or so. Makes life a little better, so it's not the magic bullet. No negative side effects for me, positives: makes me more motivated, energized and hornier too... :-)

That was apparently my experience at first with them, maybe because i was still on puberty, but i developed PSSD years later, it wasn't the first SSRI that caused it. Some people develop this at the first pill, others just years later and others when they stop the "medicine".
