A body has been recovered from the River Humber days after a huge search of the area.

Coastguards were called to a stretch of water near in Barton on Saturday and discovered the body.

The tragedy comes after a widespread search on Tuesday around the Humber Bridge involving a rescue helicopter, coastguards and RNLI crews.

The helicopter was seen carrying out sweeps of the area, following fears there had been another tragic fall from the Humber Bridge.

The search and rescue teams had to contend with the highest tidal swells this year when waves overtopped defences. Tides reached over seven metres high and led to warnings to bystanders to keep a safe distance.

Its is understood coastguards and police were alerted on Saturday afternoon and recovered the body from near the Barton Haven waterway which is linked to the Humber.

Police are believed to be in contact with the family of the person, who has not been identified.

The Humber Bridge has been the site of several tragic incidents in recent years. In March 2021, six people died at the bridge in just one month, prompting widespread calls on authorities to take action.

Following the deaths, The Humber Bridge Board closed the footpath off to pedestrians for a month. When it was subsequently opened, additional measures to safeguard the public were implemented.

Camera coverage was improved, a 'Wellbeing Hub' was installed and additional signage providing mental health support was added. However, despite a petition to implement more substantial measures, further action has not yet been taken.

The Humber Bridge Suicide Safety Measures group has campaigned for more measures to increase safety at the bridge by either raising physical barriers or adding in gates at the end for seven years, since the unfortunate death of a 14-year-old boy.

While there were talks of increasing the height of the safety parapet that line the footpath, it never came into fruition.

Rest in peace, at least they are now free from suffering. I do not think raising the physical barriers of the bridge will prevent ctb, it will just mean that people become more desperate and they will attempt risky methods that could fail. Our right to die should be respected, people should be able to exit this world peacefully at a time of our own choosing, as it is our life and our decision.

I hope the person had a peaceful exit and that he/she finds eternal peace. Condolences to the family and friends.

I hope they don't react by erecting a taller fence along the pedestrian path. It will rob others of a relatively easy and rather quick means of CTB.
