Physician Assisted Suicide in Europe

From what I understand, Belgium and the Netherlands offer physician assisted suicide legally for those who are mentally ill and deemed to be untreatable or in enough suffering. I am wondering if anyone is aware of more information about this, or a list of doctors that will work with foreigners? I have not found a lot of information about it so far and thought I would ask here.

Jane- I think what you mean is that if on your own, as a private individual (and I'm assuming you're in the U.S.) you found a Dutch or Begian doctor who would do a physician-assisted suicide for you in his or her office?

You can certainly try, but from what I have learned it will be a waste of your time and energy, it's virtually impossible.

I think that you could in theory find someone willing to do this, outside of an organization and no doubt would cost alot less. However places like Dignitas in Switzerland for example can do everything 'legally' and in very controlled conditions every step of the way. If you got someone to agree to help, then it would not be legal in that although you were asking for their help, because you weren't doing it alone there could be severe repercussions. It would depend on many factors also, doctors take oaths to save lives and there are physicians out there who believe in euthanasia, but most I would think, will work under very strict guidelines. There would be some willing to assist, as in cosmetic surgery, you could get it cheaper abroad say than in UK, BUT it often ends in failure. I understand what you are asking and hoping here, but I would urge you to be very careful as its a very deep subject and if you were to go down this route I would wish for you to be safe and cared about every step of the way. Somewhere like Dignitas would cost more, but would all be above board so to speak. If you do some research online you might find some ways into this, but from my heart to yours please keep yourself safe. I dont mean not to do this, that would be your decision and I would respect that, what I mean to convey is, that you would be in a vulnerable position and would wish for you to do its safely. As with anything in life there are very unscrupulous people out there sadly. Hope these words may have helped in some way and I do understand what you are hoping to do.

I believe you're right. It's risky enough for a physician to illegaly help a fellow countryman die, even if it's in a country with a liberal view on euthanasia. To help a foreigner is to take it to a whole other level.

This is not strictly true, though it is a complex, almost labyrinthine issue.

As a U.S. citizen, I personally spent a lot of time & energy looking into the possibility of a self-arranged, assisted suicide in Europe. Again, so difficult and complicated as to be almost impossible.
