This is so fucking painful to hear. I kept wondering why exactly I feel angry when my partner says that to me, and now I think that it's because the decision to die is the biggest and most impactful freedom you can have in your existence. People who say that shit try to strip you of that feeling of freedom (probably unconsciously), which takes away a part of your humanity, really. And also, often you're aware that they're completely wrong about this because you really are gonna kill yourself eventually. Them saying it therefore makes you sad because you know they'll suffer from this unavoidable event and you can't really prepare them for that suffering because they're rejecting your 'help' by rejecting this idea.

That's a very cruel and insensitive thing to say and I would ignore her indefinitely. If I had a bad relationship with her in general I'd probably cut her off. I've found that unsupportive assholes just make my depression worse and so I avoid them.

I despise people who say that suicidal people are cowards. They are either ignorant or lack empathy. Those who are simply ignorant can still learn to empathise when they learn more about suicidal depression, but there's no hope for the latter. You can't teach people to have empathy. They either have it or they don't.

Suicide is unpredictable af. Yes,there are some that plan their shit out. But there are also those who do it within the moment. It really depends how you feel honestly. I've been so depressed at times where i'd even consider shooting myself and that's one method I'm afraid of but within a certain mindset you gives no fucks.

I don't understand "loved ones" who regurgitate this rhetoric. There is nothing "loving" about telling someone they are a coward. There is nothing "loving" about knocking down someone who is already at rock bottom. There is nothing "loving" about insulting someone into staying, or conversely, daring them to die.

I do not feel such cruel words are motivated by "love." They are motivated by control. It feels like an attempt to control what the suicidal person says, does and feels. It is a tool used to admonish those who dare to utter their feelings and intentions, or to hold a perspective on life and death that differs from the status quo.

And that is precisely what I would say, if I felt the need to respond at all. Sometimes silence speaks louder than words.

She didn't call me a coward but my best friend said this to me. She thought my indignation was really funny. I thought about it for a bit and think she's probably right. I'm too tired to try again.
My sister used to say that shit to me when we were kids but she was trying to provoke me into trying. We're adults now she'd never say that stuff to me

That is not something that should be said by a sibling - assuming that they are loving and caring. Also it is suprising that your sister has said that it takes courage to end your own life, because according to many in society suicide is considered "weak" - you hear that argument a lot. So we are cowardly for wanting to die, but also cowardly for being unable to die - at the same time?

I just wouldn't listen to somebody saying that. They wouldn't deserve to be listened to. Being unable to commit suicide isn't cowardly, our brain keeps us alive as that is what it is programmed to do. It is hard to ctb and that is a fact. I would eventually prove them wrong as desperation drives people to overcome this instinct.

I would say she is lying. People lie about everything. Only you know if you have the courage to kill yourself. Has she the courage to kill herself when life becomes too painful to live for her?
