More austerity, more cuts to benefits and disability support. Rhetoric blaming young people for being mentally ill and unwell at a time when the NHS is completely dysfunctional, in which the social contract is completely broken, and in which the world is getting visibly worse in every way. Shock over a rising welfare bill when we have no functional healthcare system, when the population is getting older, when we mismanaged a once-in-a-century pandemic, and when people are too exhausted and miserable to be healthy.

This wont get people back into work because they need MORE support, not less. It'll just get people killed. Austerity from 2010-2019 alone killed about 150,000-300,000 people as per studies, and this is just continuing the proud tradition of vile cunt George Osbourne. Of course the right-wing morons on the BBC comment section all support it because they have no understanding of anything outside their own narrow life experience. I wish I lived in a better world with a better humanity. I can't take it anymore. I just wish I was dead like these bastard politicians clearly want (as someone who is young, disabled, mentally ill, and from a very poor background) so I could finally see peace from all of this. The world's just going to carry on getting worse in my lifetime and there's nothing I can do to stop it. People would rather blame asylum seekers and brown people than recognise the reality that we're subject to constant class war, but only one side's taking part in it.

Fuck Reeves, fuck Kendall, fuck Labour, fuck the government, and fuck this rotten, hateful country. I'm so glad I voted Green.

Just out of curiosity, what does state-provided mental health support even look like here? A friend received some form of counselling in his younger years for severe OCD and he said that it basically amounted to him just chatting with a well-meaning but rather useless normie guy about his thought patterns or something.

Best pray you don't get a Green government ... the two Green Mimisters we had in our devolved administration (courtesy of the closed list D'Hondt voting system) were not only disasters personally, Ms Slater the Canadian who left Canada to avoid repaying her student loan wasted millions on a bottle deposit return scheme just to be different from England and Wales. Just to scrap it as unworkable and leave the taxpayer to pick up the costs for the legal cases now being brought by major manufacturers to recoup the further millions they spent preparing for this debacle.
She was, of course, so committed to Green principles that she spent thousands on chartering a private luxury catamaran to visit an island rather than use the regular ferry service. Not to mention the 600 mile round trip in ministerial car and driver as the lady doesn't do trains.
Their personal expenses claims make horrifying reading ... Green are just as proficient as spaffing public money as the rest of them. They stop the gravy train just long enough to climb aboard.

Looks pretty much invisible to most of us. Or, a never ending line of sick people abandoned to our own devices.

I love how they make it seem like it's so easy to get help & benefits and that therefore a chunk of people who utilise them must be frauds, when in reality people get found dead next to DWP rejection letters because of how ableist the system is.

there had been a "huge rise in the welfare budget" and there were "too many" young people not in work, education or training.

"There's a moral case here for making sure that people who can work are able to work and there's a practical point here as well, because our current situation is unsustainable,"
ministers have complained about incentives which encourage some to "game the system"
Of course they blame the poor people as usual, that's the standard approach when they don't have anyone else to blame. No, it's the people in power who are "gaming the system", that's why they're able to make so much money by blatantly lying to everyone. Seriously, they haven't done anything to help the situation yet so it's laughable but predictable that they would try to blame the poorest people in this society. It's okay though, because you can be sure that their paycheck will be the last to get cut. Why aren't people working? Maybe because working is completely dysfunctional in this society, there's a myriad of problems around every corner mostly caused by the government mismanaging things as usual. But the people voted for it, so I blame everyone to honest, this society can continue burning. Fire starts at the bottom and the whole building collapses. But the government is too busy working out how to avoid paying for a fire alarm to notice the smoke.

Very sad to read your thoughts, which I think reflect many people's views. You see the problem I see is one where we have been governed by successive ' two cheeks of the same arse' syndrome, governments. I sense that some politicians forget that they serve us, not viseversa. We pay their fat salaries. Apart from some MPs, I wonder if our governments really feel the meaning of the term ' suffering '???. I mean not by words by by feelings. Im physically ill-health and the NHS are so swamped, they dont seem to have the resources to apply the same level of care to everyone. Austerity may return from what im hearing but really, the stories ive read about the wasting of taxpayers money by governments is astonishing. The kicker is that we get to pay in one way or another.

In Romania if you are lightly disabled , it's around 20$ per month, heavily disabled I think you get about 100$ a month? You do have 500$ a month and a care taker if you are a vegetable or around that level of disabled.

Rent at best is like 150$ if you want to live in a sardine box. And food is extra expensive, you can barely get 2 liters of water everyday for a month with 20$. Glad I got my SN before the money that I had left ran out!

Edit: that's the handicap help, the welfare helps is around 80$ , so 80$ + 100$ if you are lucky and can get diagnosed as disabled pro max* I think you can live like a king no? you might get rent and in SOME DAYS 2 WATER BOTTLES A DAY!

This was my first thought exactly...it will only cause the suicide rates in disabled people dealing with the DWP to go up...as it stands currently the whole process is already an absolute nightmare, I didn't think it could possibly get worse...

Not many but some do commit this fraud and it's been damaging for the disability community because it's only caused the DWP to be more paranoid and untrusting of us. Many of us are only are successful in our benefit claim when taking it to court which is the most stressful process. The system is so broken that a disabled person will explain how their life is effected by their disability and the DWP doesn't award them the money they are eligible for and once it's taken to tribunal in court most of us get the award anyway! In my case the person who was representing the DWP contradicted what their colleagues had concluded in my award in various different areas and this was at the very beginning of the tribunal before they even asked me any questions. As you can see it's already a big mess.

Combination of some people gaming systems, cost/availability of care, and major corruption everywhere. In general, if you are not working to pay taxes and being a good consumer then you are of no use to your Government or corporations/business and they would prefer you go off somewhere to die. Produce and consume/spend or just die. Number of people who actually care about anyone who needs help has dwindled to an all time low.

Fraud rates for disability benefits are tiny but the public is hoodwinked into thinking it's high because our right-wing oligarchal media demonises marginalised people to distract from the rampant profiteering of their own class.

Exactly the average person has no idea how hard it is to get disabilty. Im in the USA it took 3 years to get and 2 hearings with a judge and I get 644$ dollars a month (luckly I have another source of income to add) I really feel for people. But right wingers are spreading lies that there is all these people are taking advantage of the system when its actually very hard to get

Ed Davey from lib Dems spoke up in parliament in defence of us.
People do take advantage of the system. On a peer support zoom group one lady has been off work with stress for 4.5 years and so has her husband. Stressed or not, she's taken her employer to tribunal for all that time which seems remarkable for someone so stressed they can't work. But now she keeps saying she supposes she should look for a job but that seems too stressful for the family because husband is job hunting too so she's going to sit on "unable to work" benefits until husband has a job. I've stopped going on the group because she makes me angry.
People aren't even indifferent to our suffering. There are a huge number of public comments online saying if you don't have schizophrenia or psychosis or in hospital the policy should be "no work, no eat", that mental health problems other than those mentioned don't exist and are people pulling a long face, being a little bit sad or anxious and deserve to die if they don't pull themselves together. Twice I've read someone say good if kids kill themselves because it'll save us all a great deal of money in later benefits.
It's made me feel hugely guilty and even more worthless than I did. Even though I only receive £130/week in benefits. I'm in the support group for ESA so I don't have to do anything but I suspect they'll change that because I "only" have ASD, GAD, BPD, CPTSD and have a serious ctb plan. But I can't do the activities they will demand if they change my group. (To put it in perspective I was willing to go to jail when I was called for jury service because the thought of travelling to a place in a city, find the place, be there for a set time, meet new people, do a new thing, and get myself home again day after day was impossible and terrifying. Luckily the doctor signed me off). I spoke to my cpn (plus several emergency helplines) yesterday because I'm so overwhelmed by it all and he said I cannot work. I need to work on myself. But we all know his opinion means nothing and it will be down to a DWP chiropadist or ENT nurse plus a DWP drone to decide. It doesn't really matter for me practically what they do to me because I've got a few savings left and my mum gives me vouchers for food, and I plan to ctb in about a month. But it means that my last few weeks on this earth will be spent in the knowledge that the majority of people in this country despise and hate me and think I'm a lazy scrounging pathetic worthless pos. It's increasingly difficult to get through each day but I have to because I need to sort out so much neglected stuff to ensure my dog is looked after when I'm gone, even though she now lives with my ex. I'm living in self loathing, profound loneliness and despair. And I hate myself even more for being selfishness in feeling like that when, as my cpn unkindly said to me in my last session, "other people have it worse like the Ukranians" which is true but there was no need to dismiss my feelings and make me realise I'm a pos in the eyes of the one person I thought I could trust. Sorry for the long vent. 😔

They are incapable of feeling empathy towards anyone and have no sense of guilt or conscience.

So there we have it. They've told us how it will be. After working hard for 42 years but can't work or look for work now (confirmed by cpn yesterday) my benefits will stop and even when I run out of savings I won't qualify for anything else either so once the changes come in I have zero income until (if ever) I can work. Which according to the psychiatrist could be never. Luckily obviously I intend to ctb but those poor people who don't want to die.

Being poor is so expensive and hard, while if you're rich you can pay little to no tax and get a shit ton of money by doing almost nothing with smart investing and diversification of your funds.
People are on welfare for a reason, most struggle and need proper help and care and opportunities, but they simply don't have that because life just gave them poor cards...
It's sad and tragic.. and I am speaking as someone who is on welfare herself.

The Labour Party have outdone the conservatives with their monstrous attacks on the vulnerable. I voted for, Corbyn, and he will be the last Labour government I will ever vote for again. Sadly, him and John Mcdonnell are some of the last people to represent the the Labour of old, that actually cared about the plight of others who needed help the most. These are dark times indeed 😔
