Jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge post anti-suicide net installment

Given the cost/scarcity/risk of SN, I'm looking to potentially jump from the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately the city has installed an anti-suicide steel barrier 20 feet under the bridge, which aims to cause unnecessary injuries that are meant to "deter" jumpers.

I want to avoid activating my survival instinct by jumping to the net, so I was thinking of bringing a 20 ft+ rope that I can use to safely reach it without breaking my arm or worse. I'm planning to jump around 5 am just before sunrise. (Depending how much foot traffic there is) I'm also going to scout the area beforehand to confirm that I would even be able to pull this off.

It's very discouraging that they've essentially added extra steps to kill yourself on this bridge, but I would really like to stick with this method because the Golden Gate is very sentimental to me and I have always gravitated towards it.

Is this even a viable method? Can I improve my plan in any way? I haven't seen a lot of conversation about this topic so any advice is appreciated.

Since construction began on the deterrent net the method has become less reliably fatal and much more physically punishing as you said.

So I think your best option would be to combine the method with a fast acting CNS depressant or paralytic to reduce SI and avoid mid air panic or struggle. Or as you say, bring a 9m climbing rope with carabiner/anchoring clip, and wear a full body climbing harness or a makeshift one (e.g., around hips and thighs), secure the rope discreetly to the vertical railing near a structural beam (between lamp posts or security cameras) using a figure eight knot or climbing knot. Then clip into the harness and lower yourself over the edge. Descend 25–30 ft enough to hang below the net's reach and ensure a clean vertical drop to the water. You'll have to bring a quick release strap or cutaway knife to drop from the rope mid air, free falling the remaining 190–210 ft with full velocity. That is if you can do all that before police come.

Only other thing is I know the net extends ~20 feet outwards from the bridge wall. A full body lunge or vault could theoretically clear the arc though this requires precision and athletic strength.

There are multiple other bridges in the Bay Area some of which even also go to San Francisco. I'm not sure if those other bridges also have anti suicide measures but it's worth looking into I guess. Personally I never want to do the jumping method at all no matter how desperate I get though.

$400 million that could have gone to actual mental health resources, instead wasted on a bridge where a whole 30 people die every year.

To make things easier, you might want to look into an emergency escape ladder. They have them for like houses. You use them in case of a fire. They are rolled up and you pull a cord to release it. That might make it easier than a rope to get down to the net. I am not sure how it would attach to the bridge though.

I have heard that they designed that net to hurt when you land in it. Be careful.

Because of the nets, I don't think it's an ideal place for suicide. Not only that, but it is known that there are people who walk on that bridge to stop suicides

Also, you might want to take some thick gloves with you to crawl across the nuts. I am not sure what material they are made out of, but they might hurt your hands.

What kind of barbarians install suicide nets 6 meters below the bridge? you'd bruise yourself for a week if you are unlucky at best, at worst, you can be paralyzed in places, they're metal too from what I can see, what if you hit the beams that connect them between eachother, say goodbye to your lower legs I guess.

The Golden gate is only one of several bridges in SF. I read that the others dont have the safety barriers.

Thank you for the suggestion, I never considered a ladder! Honestly given the risk of injury I might look into other bridges, it sucks that you basically need to break your legs or worse to succeed now :,)

Thanks for being realistic, this really put the potential risk into perspective for me. However I have heard that a couple people have jumped to the net since being built, not sure what their injuries were like though (I'd imagine pretty bad)

And wow I didn't realize that there are people that watch for jumpers, it's so frustrating that the city is SO committed to deterring suicides on the bridge but sends you on your way with a 2k bill after a week stay in a mental hospital

I vaguely remember watching some video footage likening the metal netting to a cheese grater. (Or, maybe that was just my impression...) Maybe I've remembered it wrongly but, they almost sounded gleeful about it. Like- you seem to be getting some thrill out of these poor sods maiming themselves so that they're incapacitated enough to be carted off to the psyche ward.

I also had these fantasies of foiling various suicide prevention methods. I'd be sort of tempted to wear a high vis jacket and hard hat. Who questions someone in PPE?

Not sure how true this is, but I heard that 3 people have been able to jump since the building of the net. I can't imagine what that would've felt like, it sounds awfully painful. But whatever, I've moved on to bigger and better bridges like the Bixby bridge or the Foresthill bridge (tallest one in cali).

I think some people have managed to do it. Not sure exactly how though. I did a quick Google search earlier and it came up with 8 in 2024.

I saw a tiktok somebody made about their partner who recently CTB on the golden gate so it's still actively happening, just not getting coverage because the city wants to pat itself on the back for "preventing" suicide (a.k.a punishing the people who try)

I don't know, I hate it. I hate that people are like this, they are so stuck up in their ways and beliefs that anyone who thinks slightly different must be wrong. They don't care about solutions, just the appearance of solving something. So many studies commissioned in the names of political interests, it's sick. Anything for control I guess.

I genuinely cannot fathom the reason why.
