My opinion as one who suffers from severe depression still at 57 years old, is when you are have a desire to die that young your brain is fundamentally broken and most likely not fixable. However my depression didn't start until young adulthood with some years of remission on meds.

My opinion: these are the loving parents that all of us would ideally be blessed with, that respect our wishes. The fact she tried K and ECT and had those neurological conditions, this was the humane decision.

They should have approved euthanasia for her as the outcome would have been the same. But instead she had to have a drawn out process as her parents watched her wither away.

Exactly. It doesn't say how long it took. I don't have support for VSED and no one wants to give palliative sedation for it in the US from what I see. I'm in so much excruciating pain I wish I could end it now. I have seen some VSEDs take over a month, one was 42 days. That is a horrible way to go. I'm glad they supported her and let her be completely sedated. It would be so much easier for everyone if she got euthanasia. I wish I was in a country with it.

After reading this I was filled with so much emotion.

I feel so sad for her parents to see her go in such a horrible way. But they seem like such wonderful people to be able to understand their daughter just wanted to stop suffering.

I am grateful there are people that actually understand Iris's decision, and glad she was able to get what she wished for (even though I'm a little jealous!)

This is heartbreaking. But why did they offer her only VSED ? It's one of the worst method (according PPH). We give N to our pets to die peacefully, it drives me crazy to let humans suffer like this... I hope she's at peace now

why the rest of the world is not like that country of that web of news, I am literally same to that Iris, my first serious attempt was with just 16, but here I am with 34 because my selfish country is like "no, you must go to therapy again no matter if it already failed and if you insist with suicide them we will place you against your will in this psychiatric institution that will be your jail, without freedom and feeling same"

It is. The only thing I can think of is VSED requires a lot of willpower to achieve and gives you the most amount of time to change your mind. If she was willing and happy to go through all of that no one could claim any sort of impuslivity on her part?

Pretty barbaric all things considered.

I feel you. Her parents must have gone through a lot of anguish and suffering too, the state this girl was in is defintely nothing to be jealous of, though. Some people are just given a truly shitty hand in life.

I don't understand why think a psych ward will help. Just makes you 100 times more suicidal and more sure that you need to be effective next time to not get sent back

Agree, I mean they won't change our mind, the failed therapy was clear about it, then why they want to fight us and keep us doing hiden dangerous things that may give us injuries or organ problems after a failed attempt? it is not better a peaceful death? they can do it easily with general anesthesia and then they can do whatever to us to kill us and we won't be feeling anything, aahhhh nooo this society is so selfish saying "no, instead of helping you, lets place you inside a jail (psychiatric building) by force, inside the building you will feel the same things but we will force you to continue your nightmare inside that building because we don't care since we don't feel like you" the problem is the money? then tell us the price and we will pay for this peaceful method with anesthesia, but stop getting in our way making things worse
