The helium that you can buy in stores won't kill you anymore. At least not in the US. It's been that way since 2012, I think.

They put 20% oxygen and 80% helium in it now. It is still possible for some industrial uses to get pure helium, but the average person would probably find it difficult or impossible to access.

Strange because even though it's not pure, I still believe it's enough to cause unconsciousness. Added to the bag was to be the end of the journey.
