I need a backup plan in case SN failed. so I was thinking about putting a big trash bag over my head and making sure it's well-closed around my neck. If I did so, how long would it take to lose consciousness? would drinking alcohol be helpful in reducing the intensity of the panic that I would experience?

If you fill the bag with some almost oxygen-free gas (like nitrogen, nitrous oxide, or butane), exhale fully before placing the bag over the head, don't mix the gas with too much air (more than 25 - 28% by volume), and breathe the gas deeply at the rate of 1 breath per 2 - 4 seconds, then loss of consciousness should happen in 20 - 60 seconds since the first inhalation.

Drinking alcohol can alter your ability to properly secure the bag over the head.

I wouldn't drink too much. I would drink a small amount to relax me. Would that be a good idea?

Depends on the amount of air initially present in the bag and in the lungs and the oxygen demand of your body. More air implies more available oxygen and smaller concentrations of carbon dioxide, which imply longer time during which you can remain conscious. During exercise, oxygen consumption can significantly increase and the rate of producing carbon dioxide increases too, so exercise can reduce the time to LOC.

Based on my experiments with breath holding, it seems unlikely that I could lose consciousness from obstruction of airways at rest in less than 3 minutes. Since a bag placed over the head would always contain some amount of air in gaps, the minimum time to LOC at rest should increase in relation to suffocation via direct obstruction of airways.

Do you feel yourself especially brave when you're slightly drunk? Or you never consumed alcohol to the point of drunkenness and wonder how it works on others?
