I'm thinking of sending a scheduled email to my Solicitor with my letters attached. They'll be having to contact them anyway.

I've heard that physical notes are sometimes impounded by police as 'evidence'. That even copies aren't always passed on. I don't know how common that is but, I think it's worth bearing in mind.

Sending letters in the post feels too risky to me. They could get lost. We may back out of an attempt or, fail it. I wouldn't want loved ones getting wind of my attempt until it was all over.

Not a dumb question at all! I much prefer the idea of handwritten, but there's so many variables compared to automated services digitally. For handwritten, I've considered leaving distribution detailed in my will, so they couldn't be held as evidence, like Forever Sleep mentioned. For people who live close to me, I have also considered just dropping it off at their home the day of, but that's just inviting something to go wrong I feel like.
