How successful is hanging?

I failed once but I was lucky enough that I woke up quick and no extensive damage was done. I don't intend to CTB anytime soon, I'm just wondering for peace of mind if it ever does come to it. would just a leather belt from a tree work? and what would happen If I failed?

Why with a belt rather than a rope?

Full suspension hanging - if the branch doesn't break and you cannot grab anything - is 100% lethal.
