As the title suggests, wondering how many here rely on disability benefits for their income. I get $1709 a month for mine and quickly realizing it won't be enough to sustain me once my parents are gone. I really envy those who get big disability benefits because you can rest easy and not worry about how to survive. It's the hand I've been dealt.

&I realize I should specify, I get 600$: to take care of my needs &the rest goes towards rent. With every said & done (bills & responsibilities), I'm left with just under 100.

That's actually a decent amount to get from Social security. Some get 1200, 800 and even less. Honestly, be thankful to get that much...that's not the norm. I know someone who has worked their whole life and get less than that...which is insane. I know one person who had one job basically and gets the max amount. How they determine these things is ridiculous.

You could manage on that income if you plan everything well and don't go over on things..like food, toiletries, and such. You need to try get the cheapest rent that you can as to have money left for bills and the other stuff. You might live in a house that will be paid off by the time you need to pay the bills yourself and will only have the taxes to pay and so you won't need first and last months rent and so on. I would try and save money now so you will be in a better position when that time comes. Make a plan to save an amount each month and don't touch that.

I am not on it but need to apply for it.

I would try to work for cash. If your parents are gonna die obviously i don't know the specifics but you should try to save the $ to pay off their mortgage when they die. that way you can get disability + rent free

Obviously you aren't supposed to work for cash while on SSI at least up to a certain limit but are you really gonna stress yourself when POTUS paid under 1k in tax? Its dog eat dog USA don't feel guilty because you disregard corporate/government entities and their rules.

earlier & never actually responded to you. It's irritating & people can often be dismissive saying you're getting more than most without factoring that in many cases disability is half of working people's income.

1700$ sounds decent on paper, but I think people don't take into account the cost of living. In a lot a places rent is 1200+, I would imagine Vegas could be expensive.

I get less than you, though it "relatively" equates when you factor in the cost of living where I am. While it is still on the low side (400 for rent, 600 for personal needs), I definitely get what you mean. I'm tired of being afraid to buy things for myself, like buying insoles (to reduce pain) for 30$ means I only have 60-70 dollars for 30 days if nothing goes wrong in my life.

I get a whole $896. It's disgusting how we are discriminated against. The government was "kind" enough to increase it by a whopping 5%, only to introduce the Carbon Tax (which I dont necessarily have a problem with) which basically wipes out any increase and more than likely leaves us with less money each year.

Maybe if they would close some loopholes for large corporations they'd have more than enough to help those in need.

I qualified for earned full disability benefits on January 1, 2002, so 19 years ago tomorrow. That, the fact my parents are my landlords, and having 100% financial hardship assistance with the health care network of hospitals and clinics I get treated at is the reason I am alive today.

Over the last 19 years, I have been diagnosed with a plethora of additional medical conditions which bolster my disability status considerably.

My current disability payments vary depending on my Medicare D plan being used, but hovers around maybe $13,000 - $1,400 monthly.

Primary survival needs are ready access to quality health and dental care (I pay for a private premium dental plan), and the continuing well being of my mother. (If she goes before me, I will immediately follow. If helps that she has now displaced my dementia compromised abusive father as my primary landlord of record.)

I've been thinking a lot about the past recently. World War II documentaries. How people just died.

I read about this woman who died of tuberculosis at 23. Horrible way to die. No disability benefits for her. Happened over a century ago. No hospice. No mercy.

The other day I saw a black widow and mosquito killing each other. Then I killed the black widow. It scared me a bit. There was nobody that stopped me. No sense of justice. Made me wonder when I'd be the spider and mosquito.

Do you understand my rambling and my fear? You should know out of all people. I fear this world and the monsters in it.

I just hope I have the courage to jump into the abyss before they drag me into it.

I have zero dollars left over for medical expenses and not even enough to buy an adequate amount of food every month.

Money is one of my greatest hurdles to getting comprehensive and successful medical treatment.

What assessments do you have to go through to qualify in the states? Is it a points based system or a questionnaire about conditions? Do they reassess regularly? And how do they decide a rate to pay? Does it factor in rent cost based on area? What about medical coverage? Any help with energy bills? Do you pay council tax (for water, sewerage and garbage collection)? Do you get discounts for any bills?

Those seem like healthy monthly sums to me, who in the UK, gets less. And knowing many Americans have to work several jobs to cover costs. But I do have a few discounts, such as council tax and free medication that reduce overall costs.

Universal healthcare is a big one I know, except that it almost completely fails due to underfunding, understaffing and underdevelopment.

Is there any social housing at all? People here can apply for council homes to rent, and the rent comes out of their benefit allowance. The homes have a decade long waiting list though, nowhere near enough of them.

I"m 80-100% "disabled" so I don't get the money a fully "disabled' person gets. I get around 800 euro a month.

I don't think anybody makes big bucks on disability. I get $1,300 a month and honestly I thought that was the max. I too am afraid of what will happen when my dad is gone. (My mom passed away some years ago.).

The situation must be the same for seniors who don't have supportive family left and who live on Social Security alone. I believe many of them kill themselves, or else they die from lack of adequate food, shelter, and medical care.

Who'd have thought that people die when their lives become physically unsustainable? It's almost as if all those thoughts and prayers do no good at all!

I get less than half that and I live in a rip off country where everything is shit expensive. A pack of cigarettes is near 15. You need to budget and see what you can live without. For entertainment I don't subscribe to anything but a VPN and watch everything online. Same for gaming.

I live in Germany and I recently talked to a social worker about this and apparently, even though I'm currently not capable of working, I can't get anything since I still live with my parents and even if I didn't live with my parents I would only get the standard unemployement benefit which is about 500$.

I am not eligible for Social Security and get a very small municipal pension. It's less than 700USD each month, and I'm still paying off student loans. If I was not married, I'd have to work again and that would be torture.

I hate being dependent on him. Until we were married, I had always lived independently and alone and was proud of myself for doing so. I really, really hate feeling like I'm spending his money every time I go to the store.

I should add, in fairness, that he has never made me feel bad in any way. This comes from me and is part of my anxiety.
