In my searchs I normally see 8mm-12mm, probably is bestiest 10mm-12mm

All should get the job done but too thin might be a bit painful. Our resident hanging expert says they will be using 12mm.

10-12 is good but that depends on the rope.
Check the weight limits.

I attempted with something even thinner and I think all that matters is strength of the material and your willpower. As long as it can cut off your artery and windpipe, I don't think it matters much. But like someone already mentioned, smaller might mean more pain.
