Hi, I was prescribed valproic acid (depakote, depakine). It is mood stabilizer and helps with feeling of guilt a lot and reduces anxiety if you are suffering from it, it is easy to be prescribed to.

Yes it worked im on medium dose which is 500mg in the morning and evening. It is really noticeable. It works similarly like benzos affecting GABA receptors but I does not cause addiction or withdrawals if you stop. I just get dry mouth and my appetite has been increased. It has mood soothing effect and helps with guilt anxiety caused by depression.

It think so too, it did work for many years but not anymore.
For me SSRI stopped working, I don't want to use tricyclic anti depressants of horrible side effects like being unable to pass urine and total shrinking of genitalia, can't believe doctors still prescribe 70 year old medication today

Lithium is a tricyclic antidepressant. I used it when I was 15. It worked. I had no noticeable side effects. I then had no withdrawals after stopping suddenly with no tapering off. Not every side effect is going to happen to you. I read the side effects currently reported in 2019. I would be scared to even try it after reading those. Not every side effect affects everybody. Doctors and others make much more money when prescribing newer meds.

I'm not sure that's right... Lithium is an element that's usually in a carbonate form and used for mood stabilising properties or as an add on treatment where antidepressants haven't worked alone, whereas tricyclics are a unique chemical compound and class of medications in there own right and very distinct from Lithium, and are notorious for discontinuation syndromes and side effects. Conversely, Lithium is generally well tolerated but needs regular blood levels checked to monitor for kidney damage

Source: background in psych nursing, and having used both kinds of medications

Yes, looking on drugs.com it is not on their tricyclic antidepressants list. I thought it was one of those. Tricyclic antidepressants are older and Lithium is also so I got them confused as the same. That wasn't really the main point of what I was trying to say though. Everything else in my that post is true.

It's good that you had a positive experience with it. I'd just be wary about talking about the efficacy and frequency of side effects for entire classes of medications if you aren't certain about it. Tricyclics have been phased out as first line treatment because their side effects are quite bad. They are marginally more effective, but far less tolerable

I have edited that post. As I said I got Lithium confused as a tricyclic antidepressant. I also took responsibility for the error.
