Yes, if someone lacks something they have an intense need for, it can lead to feelings of emptiness. They may start to believe that their life is not worth living. People can often become suicidal if they are dissatisfied in their lives. Our own thoughts can torture us as well, in terms of nostalgia it can be painful longing for the past when things were better, knowing we can never get those times back. Seeing others have what we desire can make us feel inferior. Life is very unfair overall.
