Does the SN method cause pain?

I had in mind that this method was a peaceful one, with no pain, just nausea and slight headache. Now that I read some threads, they comment that it can be a very painful process.
Honestly this scares me, I would not want a slow and painful process.
Anyone who knows what it feels like?, who has survived a ctb attempt by SN.
