Do we need to manually logout to be offline or would a phone switching off when the battery dies render us as offline? I'm wondering if this is a tech issue and not a user issue.

A phone usually locks itself if it isn't used for a minute or so. However if OP was on desktop and died infront of it, its possible whoever found him checked the computer and saw this forum and read through it.
As far as I know, this forum automatically logs a user out after one hour of inactivity, but most browsers have a function that automatically logs you in again if you refresh the site. No password required
