for any UK people, have you ever asked to change to a different therapist on the NHS? are they understanding?

I'm not getting along with mine (she keeps just getting me to do breathing exercises when I say I'm suicidal, and says some quite insensitive things) but I'm scared to ask to see someone else, in case I'm not allowed and it gets back to her. fear of confrontation who??

I don't really have much hope that another person would be more helpful, but it's worth a try I guess.

I was visiting family in the middle east & my psychologist told me to request CBT on the NHS. I think changing your therapist could work, the last psychologist I met on the NHS told me i didn't have depression despite disclosing personal details to her. In the UK I've found psychologists to be much less likely to diagnose mental illness than in Dubai- where I grew up. I hope that helps. I don't think cbt will work for me as I have severe depression and anxiety and have hallucinated/heard voices in the past.

You won't get a decent therapist on the NHS. I tried last year and it was a massive waste of time. Went private and it's a completely different and much better experience.

But private costs a lot. That's why my parents prefer the NHS, they hate paying for things lol.

Well it wouldn't hurt to ask for a different therapist. You do need to understand if you are serious about getting help then really nothing comes before your health.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience too :( CBT is proving pretty useless for me as well, honestly I think I'm beyond help but it would be nice to at least see someone who takes me seriously. it's so frustrating.

Oh gosh, I'm waiting for an appointment for Psychology too. This will be my second time, the first time I hated it. CBT is useless to me, it didn't help me one bit. I got discharged even though I said I was suicidal. I'm not sure what to do or ask for. I'm sorry to hear you're not getting along with your therapist and they're insensitive at times! I hope you find someone more helpful soon !

ugh I'm sorry you've dealt with similar stuff cakey. it seems like they give you your designated number of sessions then send you on your way regardless of how you're doing. I hope your next appointment goes better love

sure no problem :)

I've seen a couple of psychologists over the years (NHS) still seeing one they've been OK and were fine about switching therapists, but mine have been ok. Yes the damn breathing exercise's can get annoying.

Yes they'll change the therapist quite quickly if you ask them to. There's not a lot of paper work. But as @Originaldon said quality is hit and miss. If you can afford it go private.

Many members have bad experiences with the NHS if you would like to search a bit on the forum to read them. I would request another therapist and hope for the best, perhaps look into online options over zoom who are willing to do a sliding scale if you can.
