Generally, asphyxiation is quite broad term. You can achieve it by restricting airways and blood supply to the brain (hanging, night-night and such), removing oxygen form the atmosphere (inert gas methods) or chemically prevent the oxygen from being transported to the brain (SN, CO methods)
