"Whenever I get somebody who comes to me and says 'I really can't go online , Ihave to commit suicide', I say well that's it.,, there's really no reason why you should go on and if you want to commit suicide do it you can check out.' Because this reduces anxiety when they feel free to commit suicide they don't really have to commit suicide so so much ." - Alan Watts

Well, Alan Watts is all about zen, and you know, those zen buddhists tend to wander around a bit..."not all those who wander are lost", and all that....(and if you think that was drawn out, try listening to one of his 1-2 hour lectures, lol)

But...he DID make his point, which is the point I quoted, the paradox:

"Because this reduces anxiety when they feel free to commit suicide they don't really have to commit suicide so so much ."

Only read the quote but yeah I believe this could be important in the realm of treatment, however unlikely. It was why I created this thread basically:

Can someone tell me in one sentence what the paradox is he is talking about?

I find his talks a little confusing although his book The Way of Zen was life changing.

It's in the line I quote above the video:

"Whenever I get somebody who comes to me and says 'I really can't go online , I have to commit suicide', I say well that's it.,, there's really no reason why you should go on and if you want to commit suicide do it you can check out.' That approach has actually worked for me for a long time. After fighting with the should / shouldn't of suicide through my teens, I eventually gave myself permission to do it whenever the time was right and it removed a level of stress. This is oversimplifying it but during the deep depressions I tell myself it is okay to let go of life and I even have very real plans for how to execute the suicide. Just knowing that I can end it tomorrow if I want allows me to live more for the present / today one more cycle. I don't really understand the psychology of it.

If I was free to commit suicide at any time I'd definitely feel better and would put it off as long as possible.
