Only the parties involved in a war can stop it and here are only two essential parties, the agressor and the attacked. The USA is the agressor in it´s proxy war against Russia. And Russia the attacked, is forced by the USA to a pre-emptive strike. Trump needs to keep his backs free against China and therfore makes a 180 degree turn. Europe foremost Germany is to deep in the ass of the USA that they don´t recognize this turn. The Ukraine should google buffer state.
This is very much the situation. Only an idiot fights a war on two fronts, and only the heir to the throne of the kingdom of idiots would fight China and Russia at the same time (kudos to anyone who gets the plagiarism there!).
To expand on it though, the real nature of the hostility is less US politics and more US economics; Russia and China both have fiercely resisted US economic supremacy and have not allowed US corporations to embroil themselves in their countries to the extent that, for example, the EU have. That makes them far more difficult to manipulate, cajole and, most importantly, make profit from.
China is now at an extreme level of economic, scientific, and technological ascendancy. They have a huge number of people, and they're graduating over 1.4 million engineers per year vs around 200,000 in the USA. They've built 500 cities in the past few decades and their Silk Road project puts them in direct competition with the USA for economic control of Africa. They recently wiped billions off the value of US AI tech by producing something considerably better.
Over the next few years you're going to see the narrative change drastically. "Putin was never the bad guy, it was always Xi Xingping!" along with calls to massively arm Taiwan and any separatist groups in Chinese territory (what the West would call "terrorist groups" if they were in their own territory). The US will aggressively try to court Russia and isolate it from China - Russia's enormous resource wealth being really important to Chinese growth.
