Width and type of rope?

Ive looked at Hanging in the Resource Threads but didnt see anything about width or type of rope. I bought a 1cm width hemp rope would this be ok? im thinking of getting a mountaineer rope? Also someone on the Site said its best to put the knot at the front not sure what that means does it mean below your chin? Thanks
