I've always thought it was less the fear of death and more the fear of the unknown and what, if anything, comes after. Not necessarily in a spiritual sense either but also stuff like "How will friends/family react?"

But I'm forced to miss out on everything now, anyway... so I guess in that sense it would still be better to die, because at least when I'm dead, I won't be able to experience the profound sadness and grief associated with watching the rest of the world move on without me, like I do now.

So, no, I'm personally not afraid of death, as much as my survival instinct tries to convince me otherwise.

I'm not afraid of death at all, it actually brings me a lot of comfort. I think people are afraid because as humans we are programmed to survive and live, it is how we have evolved. Existence is all we know really and death is not openly discussed that much, many people are distracted by life and they do not think about it often and when people have to come to terms with their own mortality (as death is inevitable) it can make them feel afraid. I think because it is the unknown too and there is no escaping from it. Many people feel powerless as apart from ctb death is out of our control and can take us at any time.
I think many people have negative associations with death, such as losing a loved one meaning they do not want to think about it. Those emotions can manifest as fear.
To me life is the scary thing. I want eternal nothingness.

It really is a good saying, but fact is most people believe in life after death. I don't, but most people do and have throughout history. Not only that, lots of them believed and still believe in hell. The prospect of being tortured for all eternity is indeed pretty terrifying.

Exactly, people are afraid of what they can't understand. Death is an unknown and the unknown is hard to understand. Many people will naturally fear their own death because they fear the unknown. That isn't the only reason but is a major one.

Just because something is guaranteed to happen doesn't make it any easier. Every infant shits their pants, but if we knew it was something that was guaranteed to happen when we came into this world, it would still be pretty shitty.

I understand what you're trying to say… death is taboo is in many cultures, especially in western cultures.. It's something that is guaranteed to happen, yet most cultures don't learn about it and don't know how to deal with it when it happens. Then instead of saying John died, people say things like, John passed away; passed on; left us… no he didn't, he fucking died.

But all else aside even though death will happen there is a lot of uncertainty as to what happens when we die. For a good portion of my life, I didn't fear death, because I believed in the philosophy that life is a school (for lack of a better term) where our purpose is to gain wisdom, grow, reflect, etc, ultimately becoming the best people we could possibly be through the process of life. That we are in a reincarnation cycle and the only way to end the suffering of life is through enlightenment (this is very much the cliff note description). While, I still believe that outlook is beneficial when it comes to dealing with and getting through this life, I now unfortunately have a much more bleak outlook. I think it was the degree of deception and programming of the human populace that made me question the logical design… just how restrictive/unopportunistic this design is, if the purpose was for us to evolve/grow. We're programmed from the time of birth and forced into government indoctrination camps for 12+ years which is centered around memorizing and regurgitating the mandated government curriculum. This is obviously just the tip of the iceberg. If we're fortunate enough, we can snap out of the programming, but such a small fraction of people do and it's completely understandable why so few do. The odds are stacked against us. Overall this is an atrocious design where life feeds on life to survive and the degree of suffering is above and beyond a practical design, so ultimately I think this place is a lot like the Matrix. I think we are trapped in a reincarnation cycle that has no purpose or end in sight. I believe the human race are slaves. The fact that it is against the law to end our own lives is evidence enough that we don't own our bodies. The war on drugs is another one… the government has the gall to tell us what we can put in our own bodies and will put us in a cage if we choose to put something in our own bodies. We clearly don't have self ownership.

On a more positive note, I think when we die we are put at ease, there is a peace time between lives. I've done a lot of research and read a lot of good books on the subject… one book of note is Journey of Souls by Dr. Newton, which you can check out a 50 minute clip on youtube that gets the gist of it. It covers the process of what happens when we die and our lives between lives. It will actually put most people's fear of death at ease. I recommend checking it out I think it could help people who are struggling with the fear of death. It's a book I first read over 20 years ago, I'd be surprised if you weren't convinced upon checking it out. I of course have a newer bleak perspective on it where I think we are potentially tricked into coming back assuming we even have a choice. But on a positive note there are many different realms besides this experience and I have to imagine that the others can't be any worse.

So to make a long story short… I now somewhat fear death in that sense. Right now it's about weighing out the life that I'm in... one where I know what's going on and can control, vs death and potentially coming back into a life where I don't have the knowledge/wisdom that I currently have. I'm pretty close to finally taking that journey and I'm happy that I'm going to take my fate into my own hands (it fits my disobedient nature). And as always, I'm going to remain very skeptical of whatever forces/entities that I come in contact with after death. I'm not going to trust anything or anyone without some serious conviction first.
