From what we understand, the purpose of life, as in humans and animals, is to expend useful energy, increasingly faster. Every form of seeking satisfaction is due to lack, wear and tear. Hunger serves to make us seek food, otherwise inertia would kill us.
Therefore, deprivation and suffering are the driving forces for life to continue and expend energy, because we will find total stability in the distant future, probably in the maximum entropy of the universe, where no movement will be possible, and consequently no pain either.

I would ask about Buddhism, wether it's true that there are these "residual energies" in our souls that get reincarnated after our deaths. That's the one thing I could never fully accept from the Buddha's teaching, even when I tried my utmost to believe in it.

The story of Jesus is a tale for the self.
For example, Jesus in the desert is the individual's withdrawal from the world into isolation to hear oneself, the own soul.
And the devil is the representation of the things in the world that try to make the person deny themselves for the sake of others, be it people, ideas, etc...
