I don't think that's what was asked. What you described was the reply button. I think what the OP wanted to know was what the button between like and reply is for, the +quote.

Quote just adds it to a multi quote. If you want to reply to multiple comments in one go, queue it to multiquote, then you'll get an option to insert quotes beside the attatch files button.

it allows others to know you have directly replied to them and their comment re quotes.

You can quote a post from one thread and insert it in another thread.
Press the quote button. Go to the thread you want to post to and press the insert quotes.

Well I think it's a stupid question anyway. The quote button allows you to quote people. Look up the meaning of the word 'quote' in a dictionary if it isn't self explanatory enough.
