The bad: mostly generative AI.

• Content from generative AI will become indistinguishable from original content made by people.
• Certain types of digital evidence (e.g. audiovisuals) will be inadmissible in courts if its source cannot be traced and verified.
• Digital communication from unverified source cannot be trusted anymore (online scams).
• Bad actors weaponize generative AI to erode public trust, spread misinformation, and degrade online discourse.
• Official, and often visited, websites will be read-only until the visitor verified who they are using a digital ID.
• AI-driven analytical tools will increase the effectiveness of dark patterns: ads, product placement, content feeds, shopping patterns, etc.

The good: other types of AI.

• Detection of medical issues using discriminative (perceptive) AI.
• Predictive AI for weather models, (public) transport optimizations, and resource management (water, energy, agriculture), emergency response time to natural disasters and diseases.
• Personalize everything: education, public services, self-help apps, etc.
• Automate existing processes, though this can be a bad thing if not sufficiently supervised by humans.

Much of the mania is deliberately contrived, probably to boost stock prices of AI companies.
But after the dust settles there will have been significant value created (taking some time to catch up even to the then-declining hype).

I think it will be very useful but it will tail off in advancements as it approaches human level AI. I just don't think our models and training methodologies won't result in super intelligence.

Like most other human inventions... it will be used to do some good things. It will mostly be used to do bad things or things solely for greed and financial gain, without regard to how it might harm others.

Keep in mind, AI doesn't have to become "sentient" or whatever to cause harm or destruction. It just has to be used without regard to the consequences by people who don't care what happens to others.

In fact, a sentient AI is something I would argue is inherently safer than one hobbled and used by corrupt humans. We know 100% corrupt humans will use hobbled AI to either purposefully ruin other people OR to accidentally/negligently ruin other people... while with a sentient AI there is at least a chance that thinking for itself would result in it being more fair and benevolent by default.

There's an old short story by Harlan Ellison called "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream". I think it really could happen. I think that our need to make artificial intelligence more and more advanced is going to backfire when what we created becomes smarter than us and makes it clear that we aren't needed anymore. Then all the planet will need is a bunch of AM's and HAL's. Voice activated technology like Alexa and Siri has always creeped me out and I tend to be a technophobe in general, only updating devices if I absolutely have to.(I didn't even get a flat screen tv until maybe....9 years ago? But that was just because tube televisions suck to carry when you live in apartments) So yeah, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I just think that sometimes curiosity killed the cat.

It scares me, and I think they could take over. I don't understand most of it, but I think we've been lied to for a long time about most of everything. In the end, it may just be that humans created AI leading to the destruction of humanity. Maybe that's not even bad thing considering what we've become.

When people say "take over"... if they mean as in purposefully by sentient "thought" then no... that's not every going to be a thing. It's fun for science-fiction, but in reality, no. But "take over" as in being put in control of things and the software being imperfect and glitches or unforeseen configurations or scenarios arise that result in wrong and harmful decisions being made by the computers? Sure, that could happen today. I mean, it already does happen... you just don't hear about it in the same context as "AI taking over" but computers are glitching all the time and creating problems for people.

Like those people who keep getting bills for $0.00 and being threatened that they are late and better pay or else! And the people they talk to can't fix it, but the computers keep sending out the threatening letters even though everyone agrees the person doesn't owe any money. I think more than a few had to write checks for $0.00 to clear the situation.

The point being... everyone worried about AI being sentient and taking over is going to already be wiped out by the non-sentient glitches that happen long before that could even be a thing.

What scares me the most about AI is its effect on people's ability to think critically. Funnily enough, there is already research coming out showing that AI use might be associated with cognitive debt. People's growing reliance on AI is only going to make the world a worse place. I'm already getting sick and tired of members on here copying and pasting shit they got from ChatGPT and other AIs onto here. Superintelligence isn't the issue here because we are nowhere near that stage in AI development. Right now, most of the AIs that people have been using are actually just machine learning (ML). MLs are just algorithms that use experience with data to adjust themselves, modifying their parameters in order to better label and predict data. An AI, meanwhile, is able to apply patterns of data learned using algorithm-refinement from ML to create solutions to novel situations.

Artificial general intelligence does not exist yet. Right now, we only have narrow artificial intelligence (NAI). NAI is a prediction-based system and is only trained on data for particular outcomes. Predictions can only be provided based on their internal boundaries. They are nowhere near as advanced as people make them out to be.

Right now, our current concerns should be on the psychological and societal impacts of AI, rather than on a bunch of imaginary scenarios. AI is already being used to create, what are essentially, modern-day minstrel shows, yet your concern is that they will somehow develop superintelligence? Really? There are people who suffer from psychosis who are using AI as a therapist and are having their delusions validated by AI, only worsening their psychotic symptoms. Some dude ended up with a illness rare illness, because AI told him to use sodium bromide as a substitute for NaCl. For reference, bromism is very rare today and was only really common during the 19th and 20th centuries, due to bromide being used in certain drugs at that time. That is not even getting into the potential impacts AI use is having on the young people, many of whom are potentially having their critical thinking skills, writing abilities, reading abilities, and social skills negatively impacted by AI use.

AI hype is already causing all sorts of damage we should be talking about that, rather than whatever the fuck options you decided to put in this poll.

The AI hype will pass, but in a few years there will be another leap in AI development that could lead to AGI. The next leap will be the emergence of ASI, after which humans as we know them won't exist anymore - there will be cyborgs. Well, maybe some bio-conservatives will remain.

We've been using AI for years, the hype right now it is because of generative AI. I think the hype will end. Maybe it will only become part of our lives, and we will only deal with chatbots instead of people in things like banking or jobs that deal with clients. Probably, we will also have to deal with deep fakes, or any other media generated.

But in reality, governments and companies have years using AI so they can track us and manipulate us.

most of the time when people are using it or talking about it from what I've observed it's only for "fun" or just to do things that you learn in school

I think LLM technology does have genuine uses. When the hype dies down, it will be a genuinely useful tool for many. Obviously they can be used for bad things but that goes for everything. Generative AI is a plague though and there is nothing good that could come from it. Also, we are nowhere near close to actual intelligent AI. What we have right now is a machine learning algorithm that simulates intelligence by relying on training data to essentially guess what human intelligence and behavior sounds like. It has zero capability for decision making or intelligence on its own. The progress we have made towards a genuinely intelligent or sentient AI is zero. Don't believe the hype.

I think that waiting for AGI is the problem is a bad idea. I think the problems are gonna get here far before AGI. I think even that, the AGI expectation is something that we're trained to do. But I believe in a revolution, believe that many of the tools we have working against us can be used for our material benefit if we overthrow capitalism. I hardly care, people have been warned time and time again about not only the dangers of AI which I don't even need to go over but how it would affect the ENTIRE job market and economy, not just creative roles, yet so many people are just utterly narrow-minded idiots who think they'll be unaffected just because of the false mindset that AI will never be that advanced in their lifetime and lack of empathy to the people who actually had their whole life goals, plans and careers ruined by it with the number of recent layoffs in relation to AI(which is still relatively new).
I've watched countless in-depth arguments for AI by the very engineers and experts themselves, yet even they admit it isn't and certainly won't be just a 'tool' that changes the economy as a whole through job mitigation and creation of new roles like machinery or music programs had been in the past but outright replace the vast majority of roles alongside a problematic lack of jobs created by it, with it advancing exponentially with no real rate of slowing down; remember that AlexNet, the catalyst of the modern AI boom as previously AI was making slow progress in comparison, only happened 13 years ago.

Luckily, there has been push on restrictions of AI but it's honestly going nowhere. I'll be dead before there is a tipping point on how it'll affect society.
