Probably both, I never had a SO but I never really looked for one so that's probably why. With friends they're not that hard to find but pretty hard to keep. I don't have the energy to give out so much attention to each person and so they lose interest in me. I'm kind of okay with it tho cause I like being alone-at home playing games/drawing and doing my own stuff so I'm not looking for friends or a partner at the moment:)
They're both difficult but generally your SO will hurt you more than a friend would. Because you tie your personal finances, wellbeing, and emotions alot tighter to a SO.

I am single and always been single so the SO (boy/girlfriend) aspect would be based on my observations of others' relationships. I find that they are equally difficult to maintain while the SO has a much higher impact on oneself as one has a lot vested into such a relationship. This is also a big reason as to why there are people around the world who CTB over a relationship, due to all the implications that result from a fallout (especially a nasty one).
Both have always been equally difficult for me too!
However, dogs and beer follow me around and blokes in motorway service station car parks always try to sell me stereos or iPhones.
