I had a very emotional conversation with my manager where I submitted my 2 week notice. Toward the end of the convo, he asked me if I was safe. Am I safe? First, unexpected coming from a work manager. Second, what do I say to that? Everyone knows that if the answer to "are you safe" is "no", then you're heading for a ride to the psyche ward.
I ended up just starting at my feet and mumbling something like "I think so".
What do you all say to this question?

I would've probably said the same as you because people are not ready to talk about "the truth" of this world.
Pretending I'm fine is what allowed me to have lots of social relationships, a good job, etc.

I just can't be honest. I guess that's why I'm so happy here. I can be...just myself.

I always give the easiest answer. "Yeah, I'm fine."

Since I do not know what was said in the conversation, I find the question rather intrusive. You quit the job and that should be it. It really is not anyone's business why or what you are thinking.

If I'm talking to a healthcare professional, I say:

1. I do not have a plan;
2. I do not have a date;
3. I do not have a method available to me in my home.

I have answered truthfully that I have some idea of how I would do it, if I did it. No one has tried to hospitalize me. They do generally get me to say that I'll call a friend, or if necessary, call 911. This is in Canada, so take that into account.

It took me ages to know what the hell they meant by this question. For ages I kept answering no I don't feel safe. I was always confused as to why they gave me that 'therapists pity' look they have.

I have complex PTSD - I feel like there's danger around every corner - I never ever feel safe.

Oh you're asking me if I'm going to kill myself - well, also a yes but I learned quite quickly to keep this one to myself!!

"Yes I'm alright" is the safe choice most of the time. This isn't the kind of world where you can tell the whole truth and not face consequences.

I think its a strange question, am I safe? Safe from what, you? people? the government? Life? the bus that may hit me tomorrow? Put into context what you mean by safe?

Oh you mean safe from myself? Yea I'm fine, dunno about the rest though

Weird question but I'd probably just lie and say I'm ok as always.

Bit of a strange thing to say to someone.
That's exactly what I thought when I read it.

"are you asking if I can navigate from my bed to the bathroom for a pee during the night with my eyes closed? safe in what way?"

Without context, if someone IRL asked me that, the last thing I'd think about is whether they knew I was suicidal or not.
