Type of Gun Ammo for 44 Magnum

To our gun experts -

I had thought I'd use a 12 gauge shotgun. But I'm realizing that isn't ideal. 1) less portable/tougher for outside and 2) I have a super arthritic back and I'm not sure I can bend and adjust to get it lined up right.

Now I'm thinking 44 Magnum revolver with flat point bullets.

Question/reassurance - this combo is super lethal right (in mouth pointed to brain)? I mean, I think people shoot bears with this setup!! Any thoughts, concerns, or suggestions? Is hollow point better or maybe it completely doesn't matter with this gun at this range?
