I thought the samurai used the shorter sword wakizashi and not tanto. But I'm not an expert.no it will be very painful, most seppuku used an executioner to chop the head off after the initial cut so not to prolong suffering.

I thought the executioner was only there to cut the head off the guy if he didn't go through with it.

This is truly very interesting . I've been having intrusive constant thoughts of death by seppuku. It always seems very fitting, and in a way combatting the eternal shame I feel for being born and the person I am. I feel that it would be the ultimate way to regain honor and somehow, forgiveness
