One of my fears is, if I were to try to ctb, I would mess up and be worse off in the end.

What would suck the absolute most is if you become paralyzed from the neck down. No one is going to help you die, and you can't do it yourself anymore, so you're just trapped. This isn't the only way it could suck, but I think that would be unmanageably awful.
