absolutely a killer, i have some pretty bad insomnia (which is clearly nowhere near the caliber of whatever keeps OP up at night, but sucks nonetheless), and run on 3-5 hours of sleep a day. it's absolutely miserable.

I once had Insomnia 3 years ago and Sonata(Zapelon)the gold standard of sleeping pills, didn't help me much, they're not foolproof
