So learning cello is my holding pattern til check-out time. Problem is I have next to no knowledge of composers and their styles.
I am hoping anyone could provide information on dark pieces that I can sink my head into.

I am aware of:
the elegies by Rachmaninov and Faure
Valse Sentimentale (Tchaikovsky)

Additionally, if it can be found on youtube that would be great as I can't practically read music, (eye condition)

Thank you for your time.

The first movement of Myaskovsky's Cello Concerto is quite dark. As far as I'm concerned, his is style is late Romantic, despite him being alive during the modern period.
Also, Myaskovsky's Cello Sonata No. 2 is dark and beautiful.

Saint-Saens's Cello Sonata No. 1 is dark and aggressive. Another late Romantic composer.

And the last of these late Romantic works is the famous Elgar Cello Concerto. He wrote it in the aftermath of World War I. The Jacqueline du Pre recording is what made the concerto famous.

I guess you would like the Bridge Cello Sonata too, but I haven't listened to it.
