Although, to a degree, I do understand from what kind of space of a mind this belief came from, and why it still is repeated as THE motivational speech to this day, I personally think it's false from a broader perspective.
Suicide is a path. It's not a decision that comes from one miserable night to another. It's a last resort. To many, it's a salvation. It's a procedure that takes days, months, years to conclude.
As much as suicide is not temporary, suffering that leads to it, in my belief, isn't, too.
I do think problems aren't temporary, no matter how much "temporary" and small they seem at times. A problem might pass, resolve on its own. But what comes with it, how much damage to one's heart and mind it takes to make a human seek death, is permanent. You never forget grief of this kind.
Time doesn't heal wounds, it just takes, and takes, and makes one process the present, a possibility, and outcomes until a brain gets exhuasted and numbs itself out. This isn't temporary.
There are also sufferings that last actively for eternity. A terminal illness. A loss of a beloved. A debt one has no way of ever paying full throughout their entire natural lifetime. A hand that had struck one it should've protected instead of inflicting harm. I'm sure some are unfortunately able to put themselves in these scenarios.

I don't believe that suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems, because I believe that problems of this life leave their residue on a person, until they scar over and over, until one wishes for the scar to be removed, and it results in too much tissue to dispose of without a trace.

"Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems"

And thank God for that!

(also, these problems I'm experiencing are NOT temporary; I still have not been able to find a job in 3 years, or hit the lottery so I don't have to work some dogshit job, or get to live the objectively better and more convenient life of a mentally healthy person who is attractive and naturally gifted, etc)

Technically, a problem that lasts for "only" 57 years is temporary if you live long enough to outlive it, but who the fuck wants a serious, exceedingly detrimental problem for 57 years?

Exactly what I had in mind. It's never truly "temporary", is it? After all, who wishes to live just to survive?

I have my doubts that even suicide itself is a permanent solution. How could we ever prove that it is? If reincarnation is a thing, or if we get sent to an even worse afterlife that we don't want either, then suicide is just another bandaid fix like all the others. What we need is a guaranteed permanent solution to any and all problems, otherwise, problems will just keep coming no matter what.

I'm not saying this to change anyone's mind about suicide if it is their choice, only that it is one of the things holding me back from it. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have a permanent solution to all problems so I never have to deal with problems ever again. Recently I stumbled upon a philosophy called Anti-Cosmic Voidism, which is to say that destroying the entire universe and whatever put it here is the ONLY permanent solution there actually is. It isn't enough to merely escape from the concentration camp, if the possibility of being put back into it later on is possible, so the solution is to DESTROY the concentration camp and whoever or whatever it is that created it. The universe IS the concentration camp, and whatever put it here is the Hitler God that needs to be destroyed.

Perhaps it seems like I am losing my mind here by saying all this stuff, because I genuinely believe that an evil creator designed the entire reality that we find ourselves in - a reality where living things are FORCED to steal energy from other living things if they want to survive, inflicting torture on them in the process as a direct result. It's just another reason why suicide appeals to me as much as it does. If I cease to exist, what harm can I cause to other living things? NONE! My problem is, I don't know for certain that suicide will directly result in my permanent nonexistence. People who say that it will can't prove this to me, so how am I supposed to believe them?

Edit: Only thing I wanted to add here is that regarding problems being permanent or temporary, the ONLY way problems can be temporary is if the solution that solves them is permanent. If the problem is something that only lightly affects someone, then finding a solution that solves it is easier, but the worse, bigger, and more painful the problem is, the bigger the solution has to be to permanently solve it. It's just an unfortunate fact that people who say this garbage in your thread title refuse to admit.

Such an interesting perspective, thank you for taking your time to share this on my thread. I suppose that you're right—we cannot easily conclude that suicide is truly permanent if the outcome of the act isn't ever guranteed. Although I do believe that suicide possesses just a tad of some permanency to itself, as it does end a physical existence of one in this world we're aware of, I never really thought about it this deeply. That said, can we even call all of suffering truly temporary, if its apparent solution isn't deemed as permanent in a sense we know of? Wouldn't that make suffering an ever lasting cycle for eternity until a truly permanent solution is discovered? I think that's one of the main reasons why the act of suicide seems so complete to me.

I always felt like it's a stupid statement like if I can solve my problem permanently that's actually good right? I don't understand this statement and always thought it makes no sense. I would rather solve it permanently than get another problem, another problems and stress over again and again.

Technically, terminal cancer is a temporary problem... but only because you get to die at the end of it. Our body itself, chooses death as a solution in order to make a serious problem temporary.

Even if all problems are truly temporary, they will inevitably be replaced by another "temporary" problem, and another one, and another one, creating a permanent state of facing problems with life.

Suicide can be seen as a solution to any one problem, but it also prevents all future problems a person will inevitably face and removes all of the uncertainty that comes with the future. It's cutting the cord to an endless cycle of suffering.

Unless these pro-life people want to seriously try and argue that you can live an eternally problem-free life and know that with 100% certainty, problems are here to stay. Not all of us care as much about constantly fighting against entropy, or we just don't reap the enough benefits from living to make facing those problems worth it.

There are too many impulsive suicides, so that phrase remains relevant. It's just wrongly used too often.

Suicide is a permanent solution, yeah. But you don't go assuming that one's problem is temporarily.

There are temporary sufferings. Break up with your BF/GF is one. Losing your savings is another.

But there are sufferings that are not temporary. Racism/sexism/LGBT is one prime example. Losing your savings can also fit here.

Knowing "suicide is permanent" is good enough.

"Permanent solution to temporary problems."

In some cases, yes. This is true. There are plenty of people who attempt suicide due to a moment of crisis or impulse. Human beings can be extraordinarily emotional; sometimes a small, temporary problem really does feel life-ending. Breaking up with a lover, or getting a divorce, or losing your job that same day. These instances, in the moment, can be consuming. Sometimes people do attempt over these issues in a moment of emotional turmoil, because it can be (for the moment) impossible to see past the immediate grief, loss, or pain.

In other circumstances, however, the 'temporary problems' aren't so temporary. An incurable disease or disability, or chronic pain that will never go away. A mental illness that will be there with you until you die, even after a person has tried medication, therapy, inpatient, even electric shock treatment (a friend of mine has been through all of these to no avail). Racism and discrimination that seem to stick around throughout the generations. Even the lack of access to healthcare, insurance, treatment, housing, and food can be a permanent problem; sometimes people can get out of those situations. Other times, they can't. We have people at our clinic who can't get off the streets despite trying for decades.

Sometimes problems are temporary. Other times they aren't. The "permanent solution for temporary problems" is an important saying, but it's not a blanket one.

Technically all life is temporary, but since I don't want to keep suffering for another 20, 30, 40, 50 years like I did the last 10, which is just by far and any statistic the most likely outcome at this point I will take a permanent solution, thank you very much.

On a more serious note, yes, some pressing problems are really temporary as in solvable in a matter of months and that is when the permanent solution might not be the right one. But if they either aren't or there is just so many of those rather pressing problems that you would need half your lifetime to be able to solve them while continuing to suffer from them – which still doesn't entail any guarantees that you will actually be able to do that – the permanent solution becomes attractive again. It's a case of the juice ain't worth the squeeze at that point.

Let's face it, life is full of problems.
Yep
My meds barely work now
I feel empty
I have no reason to keep on living
Like ive got so many stuff
So many friends
Probably a lot of talents
But at the end of the day.. does it even matter?
This month has been complete and utter torture for me
Ive been feeling loney af too
Guess thats just icing on the cake
I really wanna see hoe my friends will react when i die
My parents
My relatives
Gosh i don't know anymore..

You solve one problem... there will be another waiting in a few seconds, days or weeks at most. Repeat pattern. Year ends. Cycle repeats.

Sometimes I wonder, if these problems are only "temporary," then happiness is temporary too. So why put so much effort into something that only lasts for a little while?

Laptop If you had a laptop who's battery was flat, you could replace the battery and all is well. You could replace the hard drive, ram, the screen, but if I dunked this same laptop in a bathtub overnight, that motherboard is gonna be rusty beyond repair. Now imagine someone who doesn't know much on the process of fixing computers, telling this tech repair person that "well, you can fix battery and hard drive problems. why can't you fix this problem?". Sure, you could take the motherboard from another laptop and transfer it into this broken laptop, but it means the core of the laptop is different. It's called the "motherboard" for a reason: it's the central component of that computer that connects all the other components.

Now imagine you were born with a brain equivalent to a laptop in it's first few seconds of being underwater. You could quickly take it out and put it in rice and save it, but not only did this laptop come with a defect which means it's rusting a lot quicker than it should (and this is a fairly rare model so trying to find info about it via manuals and the internet is quite difficult), but also there's no rice left in the house because someone went and cooked it all for their lunch and shouted at you if you dared try to touch the rice. So yeah, theoretically you could save the laptop but by the time you've realised how bad the damage is getting, it's already too late.

That's what having autism feels like to me. I'm fundamentally broken and there's nothing that can be done anymore. Temporary problem my ass.

yeah like no shit, do they really believe we think being dead will just end at some point? the whole motive (for me at least) is to not exist at all. consciousness was a mistake and i cannot wait for it to finally be over
