BDSM (which includes masochism… in the name) is always taken part in with pre-established consent. This means that everyone involved has an understanding of what is going to happen in the scene, and therefore everyone has an understanding that they are not in real danger and risk.

No masochists want want to be in real danger (generally speaking) , they just get some kind of pleasure from simulating danger, essensially. It's like bungee jumping vs diving off of a cliff.
Also, wanting to be physically hurt or humiliated is very different from wanting to be injured to the point of death haha.

I am speaking generally.
Most people who partake in masochism are not in search of real danger.
I am a masochist who also likes the idea of REAL danger, but I consider that to be separate from the way I engage with masochism generally because of the association masochism has with roleplay within BDSM. It's also very largely focussed on communication and most importantly mutual safety.

If I wanted to skydive and my partner wanted to skydive without a parachute, I wouldn't say they were at an elite level of skydiving, I'd just call them suicidal.

I think this is just a case of how you define the term 'masochism', what your experience is with it and therefore what you associate it with. I agree that it opens up an interesting conversation. I think people outside of the community would perceive the word 'masochist' very differently to me and probably associate it with wanting to partake in actual danger, unlike myself.

Masochism encompasses both physical and psychical suffering.

'Autoerotic asphyxiation' is a sort of masochism because it's literally defined as deriving sexual pleasure from suffocating yourself. It's also possible that people who die this way also derive sexual pleasure from being discovered (usually in BDSM gear and in generally uh… embarrassing positions) which could mean there is an aspect of humiliation to it.
