Dead Souls (Remaster) - Joy Division:



This song is interesting. The lyrics describe the pain that the lead singer of the band, Ian Curtis, was experiencing before his suicide in the year 1980. Before his death Ian suffered from seizures which severely affected his life including his music career.

I am not sure if this song is totally about suicide. My internet is not working properly so it is difficult to search for information about it; plus there do not seem to be many results anyway. Different people make different claims about what the lyrics actually mean; some say that they refer to Ian Curtis's constant torture in his life and that he felt he had no reason to live any more; which would mean that the song is related to suicide. Another claim is that it is a reference to the Russian novel of the same name: Dead Souls. The novel is about climbing the social ladder and the accumulation of wealth. It mocks the upper-class that were around in the time period that the novel is set in: 1800's Russia. Supposedly the song related to this novel in that it points to the absurdity of life and how society is very materialistic and shallow. If this is true then it would relate to the lack of purpose that Ian felt before his death.

Lithium - Nirvana:



The lyrics of Lithium are about the lead singer, Kurt Kobain, and the isolation that he experienced throughout his life. In the song Kurt sings about how he has found his "friends" who were imaginary. He created them to fight off the loneliness that he felt due to not having many (or any) human friends at all. The title of the song is a reference to the element of the same name (Lithium) that is used to treat bipolar disorder - Kurt cobain suffered from this disorder. The unhappiness, isolation and manic depression that Kurt Cobain went through are what are thought to have contributed to him ending his own life in 1994, so this song could definitely relate to suicide.

This is an additional mention. It is a track from the movie: Full Metal Jacket (1987). Nothing much can be said about how this relates to the topic without spoiling the film; other than that this song is the theme of one of the movies characters: Leonard. You may wish to watch it for yourself to find out the meaning of this song; however it is a war movie so it might not be to your liking - depending on your preference(s). If you or anyone else is not interested in watching the film then I could post more about this song.

As I read what people post here, I no longer wonder why I'm so fucking lonely, alone and socially isolated. It's because I listen only to top quality serious music (Wagner, Bach etc.). Especially in Wagner's operas, many of the characters long for death like me and some of them even die of suicide (like I will soon).
