I think it is reliable because it is not primarily sold as a suicide kit. It is used as a preservative for bacons, so it should be reliable.
And there is a test you can perform to check if it's really SN. You need to take out couple of drops of blood and then add a little bit of SN to it. If the blood separates to dark and bright red color then it is SN and it is working. Search the forum for a detailed guide.
