First, let me apologize for my passable English writing and a tedious story.
I do tutor to pay for my fee, there is this kid who is only 15 years old, I've been taught him for two years, he did make progress from all F to Bs and Cs, but during these six weeks he keeps failing to finish his homework. My first thought was to reduce the amount, up to the point that it only requires him ten minutes per day(his own evaluation). But he still can't deliver.
So yesterday I asked him if he is having some kind of trouble, he told me that he wanted to kill himself, I was shocked as hell, not to the idea itself, god knows I've been thinking about CTB for quite a while, but he is just a kid!
I know as a teenager we all had some eccentric ideas, but when I asked him on the scale of one to ten, how serious is he?Then he answered 8 or 9. He even googled some news about suicide. I tried to ask him what happened, but he just weeped and cried. He asked me not to tell his parents, so I just told them that he did a better job this week, and suggested them to take him to his favorite steak house as an encouragement. But I don't think I can forgive myself if, god forbid, he did hurt himself.
The tricky part is that there is nothing I can do to help him without letting his parents or school knows, but to rat on him would be a direct betrayal to his trust, and also immoral to me(especially I don' appreciate mental health policy on CTB in my own country), not to mention the harm of overreaction.
Anyway, any suggestions? I tutor this kid 2 hours per week covering five subject, so if I spent all 2 hours playing amateur therapy, his parents might find out he is falling behind in schedule. What else can I do to help him?
Thanks for your patience and advice!

Since he is so young, I would see reasonable to rat on him. I'm sorry for all the zoomer edgelords but your brain isn't formed until your 20s, so yeah, you're not an adult and shouldn't be given the autonomy of one.

Though I would talk about it with him first. Like 'dude, your parents need to know! Why don't you tell them?' kind of deal. Of course I would also be curious about exactly why he is suffering so greatly and would ask about that the first thing.

I think you have a point here, if this conversation took place between myself and a adult friend, I wouldn't be so disturbed, we might even exchange some ideas.

I will definitely try that next week. Thanks a lot. His suffering frightened me. I wish he was just thinking too much or overeacting to some minor issue. If unfortunately he suffers from tutoring itself, I guess I would quit the job and tell his parents to go easy on his grade…..

This is quite a moral predicament and i would wish nobody to be faced with such. Since he clearly trusts you try to convince him that he has all the time in his life for things to change and that he needs to speak about his problems to his parents. If he seems not convinced after that like whatevs said tell his parents even though it's a hard thing to do.
