Like I want the food that I LIKE.
I want to do my own grocery shopping, not get whatever that certain food bank gives me.
As if I need any more indicators that Im poor and don't have shit of my own.
Would rather just do VSED or Hanging or both. Fuck it.

poverty is the main reason I want to die , it's unbearable, I can cope with mental illness, if only I had money to buy food

I mean, I get it... but when you're hungry you have to take what you get. I got some food a while back from a church and they asked me questions about allergies and such before giving me foods. A few things I didn't especially want or would have gotten for myself but I found a way to make them work. I hate lima beans so I combined a can they gave me with some other things to make a soup that was good. So I didn't waste the food. I also really do not like fish, and only rarely will go for the white albacore tuna... they gave me some cans of regular tuna.. didn't love it, but I mixed with some mayonnaise and mustard they gave to me and made sandwiches for several meals so it didn't go to waste.

No chance for upward mobility? It wouldn't be so bad if you knew it was temporary and there was hope things would improve in the future.

I tried volunteering at one and it was so fucking depressing having to hand out straight up moldy food to people, because ''you can cut off the bad parts'', and kinda just seeing them have to accept it.

ב''ה,

The whole thing is a farce, but if it's available and not too much of a pain in the ass, the sheer amount of production specifically for food banks (as may see a bit of institutional and industrial usage for government cafeterias and schools and such, because don't tell me you're not getting cans you've never seen otherwise) is almost absurd and half "religious" in the sense of giving to the created serfs who might manipulate a census and half agro-industrial complex that may or may not ever get dinged for fraud and there'd be yet less food generally available if they ever did.

It's all a bit sketchy yet, at the same time, most folks not making enough to somehow 'own' a standard suburban house do qualify for the literally getting a random box of food that might have gone in a dumpster otherwise programs.

That's USA and while the whole "now you've got an infantilized school lunch problem of trading it with your neighbors," it is at least a courtesy and for nonperishable stuff a lot of places where the sometimes 'working poor' rely on this end up with a community table or laundry room to loosely trade around the agricultural surplus as is really not unlike having a garden and having too much of one frickin' vegetable one month of the year and then not much else if not putting equivalent effort into canning or pickling it or trading it at a market somewhere.

So it's screwed up but as much as it's a common human decency to share food, the absurdity of the system allows for that and then groceries can be vaguely more convenient if not in the 'things suck enough that a few random cans and boxes make survival through all the other BS.'

EBT varies wildly but in, I guess I'd wager 'more than half of USA' though maybe not as much in the particularly Puritan or opposed areas, the state of the economy has made it the hassle it is but relatively loose enough to be worth the trouble, though different states limit it in different ways and if you suddenly get income above the cutoffs and keep using it that'll be a paperwork hassle. It is a ridiculous possibly month long process to apply (hence the popularity and existence of food banks) but once in, the covered items are just on that and not out of your cash, so consider that probably a majority in a lot of places are on it and any taxes paid in better times were supposed to pay for that. But the 'now you've put in a month being chained to one state' is a dumb part.

I guess it depends where you are, I also volunteered at one and there was no shady business like that and the food quality and diversity was quite good.

I mean... on the one hand giving out "moldy" food (if that actually happens) isn't great... but getting something that you can eat around the bad parts is still better than nothing at all or dumpster diving, no?

The real problem we have in the world is all the food that goes to waste. Forget how you feel about supporting people in need... Even if you're an absolute asshole who only wants "me mine" and screw everyone else... It's been demonstrated multiple times that the world collectively wastes more than enough food to feed everyone who has been going without. Think about that. If you hate paying for "someone else" you're really already overpaying anyway... it's just you're paying for food to be wasted and thrown away.

IF we were sensible about it, and enough people and companies pitched in just a little bit... we could refine the delivery system to account for that and actually get the food to people who need it before it goes to waste and it might actually save money when you factor in the downstream healthcare problems that comes from malnutrition. Imagine that, you could actually feed everyone in the world AND save money. What a concept!

But people can't seem to get their shit together on this... and civilization has been around more than long enough to have gotten a proper handle on this by now.
