Happens all the time...
It seems like people want to hear what they expect and want people to behave like they expect, like walk-on actors in their lives and not as people on their own.

I'm here, someone who has never been the protagonist of his own life.

I'm trying to, but it's hard to fly with atrophied wings.

People are shockingly frail-minded. Anything is too much.
When your feelings cause them discomfort they're bound shut you up to stop their discomfort, whether that's just nervously changing the subject, or the extreme of rejection and abandonment - or any version in between.
