Dead men tell no tales so we'll never know for sure if every inert gas asphyxiation is truly painless but given that "industrial accidents" happen and victims usually drop dead w/o warning so one can assume that properly immersing oneself into oxygen free atmosphere should provide fast and painless demise.
I's assume that you talk about Alabama first nitrogen execution where witnesses stated that body was trashing violently during whole ordeal. That was attributed to "natural body twitching" after death and also Kenneth Eugene Smith holding his breath and panicking due to insufficient CO2 removal from bloodstream. Kinda understandable since a) guy wasn't suicidal, b) already survived botched lethal injection. I'd be scared shitless too.
It is also worth noting that despite those findings 4 more people were executed with N2 so it wasn't as inhumane as some critics wanted us to believe
